DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

OVERVIEW OF THE DEPTH STUDY PROVISION FOR 2015 SOME SPECIFIC ISSUES STRUCTURE OF THIS SESSION DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

LEARNERS ARE EXPECTED TO STUDY A COHERENT ELEMENT OF HISTORY IN GREATER DEPTH LEARNERS ARE REQUIRED TO STUDY A COMPLETE TOPIC OVER AN EXTENDED TIME SCALE THE DEPTH STUDY IS DIVIDED UP INTO TWO UNITS: DEPTH STUDY I, ( UNIT 2) IS STUDIED IN YEAR 12 AND COMPRISES THE FIRST HALF OF A COMPLETE DEPTH STUDY. DEPTH STUDY 2, (UNIT 4) IS STUDIED IN YEAR 13 DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

SIMILARITIES The Depth Study remains primarily focused on primary sources and interpretations Learners are encouraged to use a wide range of different types of historical evidence There remains an emphasis on analysing and evaluating a range of contemporary sources in context Learners are expected to understand how and why different historical interpretations are formed Learners are still required to answer open ended essay type questions DIFFERENCES The Depth Study has a new format but with NEW BUT FAMILIAR assessment techniques The content of The Depth Study has been increased in most cases Depth Study Part 1 focuses on assessment objectives AO2 and AO3 Depth Study Part 2 focuses on assessment objectives AO1 and AO2 DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

CURRENT DEPTH STUDIES 1.WALES AND THE TUDOR STATE c – REBELLION AND REPUBLIC c REFORM AND PROTEST IN WALES c CHANGE AND CONFLICT IN WALES c BRITAIN c THE GERMAN REFORMATION c THE FRENCH REVOLUTION c THE CRISIS OF THE AMERICAN REPUBLIC c – NAZI GERMANY C CHANGE AND CONTINUITY

1.THE MID TUDOR CRISIS IN ENGLAND AND WALES c ROYALTY,REBELLION AND REPUBLIC c REFORM AND PROTEST IN WALES AND ENGLAND c POLITICS AND SOCIETY IN WALES AND ENGLAND c RELIGIOUS REFORMATION IN EUROPE c FRANCE IN REVOLUTION c THE CRISIS OF THE AMERICAN REPUBLIC c GERMANY: DEMOCRACY TO DICTATORSHIP c SIMILARITY AND DIFFERENCE DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

MOST OF THE DEPTH STUDIES HAVE BEEN EXTENDED IN DATE RANGE. SOME HAVE BEEN EXTENDED MORE THAN OTHERS TO GET COMPARABILITY OF COVERAGE: FOR EXAMPLE: DEPTH STUDY 8: GERMANY: DEMOCRACY TO DICTATORSHIP c UNIT 2 (AS): PART 1 : WEIMAR AND ITS CHALLENGES c UNIT 4 (A2): PART 2 : NAZI GERMANY c DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

IN SELECTING THE DEPTH STUDY THERE WILL BE: SIMILARITY AND DIFFERENCE CHANGE AND CONTINUITY WHATEVER YOU DECIDE. DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

THE WORKLOAD WE HAVE EXTENDED THE CONTENT OF MOST OF THE CURRENT OPTIONS IN ORDER TO SATISFY THE DEMAND FOR A TOUGHER AND MORE CHALLENGING COURSE. THE ENTIRE COURSE NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT AS THE SOURCE BASED QUESTIONS ARE COMPULSORY AND THERE WILL ONLY BE A CHOICE IN SECTION B OF UNIT 4 SIMILARITY AND DIFFERENCE DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

THE WORKLOAD THE FOCUS OF STUDY IN THIS UNIT IS ON A SHORTER AND COHERENT ELEMENT OF HISTORY IN GREATER DEPTH. WE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO PROVIDE EXTRA AND MORE DETAILED GUIDANCE ON THE CONTENT TO BE TAUGHT. WE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO STRUCTURE EACH DEPTH STUDY SO THAT IT CAN BE COMPLETED IN FOUR HALF TERMS OF STUDY. SIMILARITY AND DIFFERENCE DEPTH STUDY FROM 2015

DEPTH STUDY 8: GERMANY: DEMOCRACY TO DICTATORSHIP c UNIT 2 (AS): PART 1 : WEIMAR AND ITS CHALLENGES c THE CHANGES FROM THE 2012 SPECIFICATION INCREASED CHALLENGE FOR YEAR 12 SHOW GREATER DEMAND THAN GCSE COURSE DEPTH STUDY PART (1) FROM 2015

THE CONTENT OF THE UNIT The content of each unit is set out around CONCEPTS / PERSPECTIVES to make it manageable and to provide some structure for Centres Each has a number of content sub-sections with a clear historical focus There are also a number of areas of historical debate identified. Centres should focus on these areas of debate when teaching this unit. Each MUST be studied – there are no alternative routes through the specification. DEPTH STUDY PART (1) FROM 2015

THE CONTENT OF THE UNIT DEPTH STUDY PART (1) FROM 2015

THE COVERAGE OF THE UNIT WE HAVE TO INSIST THAT THERE IS COMPLETE COVERAGE OF THE COURSE SINCE THE SOURCE BASED QUESTIONS IN UNIT 2 ARE COMPULSORY DEPTH STUDY PART (1) FROM 2015

ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVE 2 Analyse and evaluate appropriate source material, primary and /or contemporary to the period, within its historical context ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVE 3 Analyse and evaluate, in relation to the historical context, different ways in which aspects of the past have been interpreted DEPTH STUDY PART (1) FROM 2015

ASSESSMENT OF UNIT 2 There are two compulsory questions: Question 1 requires learners to analyse and evaluate three complex contemporary sources in the context of a specific issue from within the Depth Study[AO2] Question 2 requires learners to analyse and evaluate different ways in which aspects of the past have been interpreted by considering two different extracts from historians on a specific issue [A03] The assessment structure shows clear progression from GCSE and is set at the standard expected at the end of the first year of an A level course Unit 2 is focussed on AO2 AND AO3. There are NO AO1 MARKS DEPTH STUDY PART (1) FROM 2015

UNIT 4 Unit 4 is a continuation of the earlier part of the Depth Study which was studied for Unit 2 Learners are expected to build upon the knowledge and skills they have acquired at AS The focus is on assessment objectives AO1 and A02 Learners must answer two questions: A compulsory source based question in Question1 Either question 2 or question 3 which are traditional essay based questions DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2015

THE CONTENT OF UNIT 4 The content of each option in Unit 4 leads on from that studied in Unit 2 and is set out around CONCEPTS / PERSPECTIVES to make it manageable and to provide some structure for Centres Each has a number of content sub-sections with a clear historical focus Each MUST be studied – there are no alternative routes through the specification. DEPTH STUDY PART (1) FROM 2015

DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2015 CONTENT OF UNIT 4 P.59

GENERAL ISSUES: EXTENDED CONTENT COMPLETE COVERAGE MORE DETAILED CONTENT EXEMPLIFICATION NEW BUT FAMILIAR ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES MAINLY COMPULSORY QUESTIONS DEPTH STUDY SUMMARY

UNIT 2 AO2 AND AO3 ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES TWO COMPULSORY QUESTIONS STUDY SOURCES AND INTERPRETATIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE ISSUE NOT THE DEPTH STUDY AS A WHOLE DEPTH STUDY SUMMARY

UNIT 4 CONTINUATION OF UNIT 2 BUT AO1 AND AO2 ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES COMPLETE COVERAGE REQUIRED ONE COMPULSORY SOURCE BASED QUESTION: MORE COMPLEX SOURCES CHOICE OF ONE ESSAY FROM TWO DEPTH STUDY SUMMARY
