Giraffes By: Emily M.

Physical Characteristics  Giraffes are 14 to 17 feet tall when they are grown.  Their tongues are black with a sandpaper texture.  When they are fully grown, they weigh about 2,500 to 3,000 pounds.

Behavioral Characteristics  Giraffes can go long periods of time without water.  Everyday they need about 10 minutes to 2 hours of sleep.  They also prefer to run from danger, not fight.

Habitat  Giraffes live in central, eastern, and southern Africa.  Savannahs and light woodlands are the surroundings they prefer.

Food Preference s  A giraffe’s favorite food is acacia leaves.  They also prefer bark, leaves, flowers, and all sorts of fruits.

Interesting Facts  Giraffes are the largest animals that live on land.  The male giraffes are called bulls and the females are called cows.
