Non- Fiction /Literary Elements Vocabulary Static characters – do not change in the course of the story Dynamic characters – show change or growth (behavior/personality/beliefs) A symbol is something that stands for itself, but also represents something else (example: Dove = a bird, peace) Chronological order is the order of time

Tone is the mood or attitude the writer takes towards the topic (didactic, sarcastic, loving, serious, satirical) Irony is the difference between expectation and reality (of what really occurs) Literal meaning is actual meaning Figurative meaning - Word or phrase that describes one thing in terms of another. It is not meant to be literal. (Example: break a leg) Similes and metaphors are types of figurative language. Imagery: Language that uses the 5 senses to describe

Conflict is the struggle between two opposing sides. It can be internal, takes place inside you (greed, etc.) or external, takes place outside you (a fight, etc) man vs. man; man vs. nature; etc.
