National World War I Museum May 11, 2011

Expectations Public museum dedicated to those who sacrificed with their lives so those surviving could enjoy their freedoms. We will be respectful. Brookwood’s Tradition. Stay with your group at all times. Write with your paper on the floor or in your hand.

Agenda for the Day Board the bus at 9:00. Arrive at the museum at about 9:25. While Mr. Shadonix checks in, join up with your parent volunteer. Be patient and flexible at the beginning.

Agenda for the Day 9:30 – Orientation film. 10:00 or so – Begin study time on the appropriate side of the museum. 10:50 – Move toward the back and middle of the museum to view a 19 minute film. 11:15 – Begin second portion of the study on the opposite side of the museum from where you started. 11:50 – Everyone be at the front doors to meet up with a docent to go to the frieze.

Agenda for the Day 12:00 – Walk to the north side of the museum to view the frieze. See your packet for what to listen for and look for 12:30 – Board the bus and depart for Brookwood.

Study Trip Each group will have an envelope of activities to do. Use the paper and pencils in the envelope to complete the work. Return your work and pencils to the envelope when you finish with your sketches after lunch. Give the envelopes to your teacher when you board the bus to come back to Brookwood.

Question Categories Category 1 - The first category of questions is short answer questions. These have you locate an item and respond with an explanation. Category 2 – These involve having you imagine yourself in a specific situation and writing about how something might sound, smell, or feel. Category 3 - The third set of questions ask you to locating some harder to find objects. Tell where these were located and what their significance is.

Category 1 What impression are you left with after reading “Total War”? When you listened to songs or poetry in the Reflections rooms what did you think about? Summarize an activity you completed on the interactive “war tables”? What did a gold star on a service banner indicate? What might you have felt if you saw one on a neighbor’s house? What happened on 5 October 1918? How were dogs used on the battlefield? Compare and contrast the insignia on the aircraft found suspended on the ceiling. Two of the three airplanes were flown into Kansas City to become part of the display. What do the poppies symbolize?

Category 2 After looking at several of the mortar and artillery pieces, what would it have felt to be beside it when firing it off? How would it feel, sound, and smell? Look carefully at the tunics and other clothing of the various nations. What would it be like to live and function in the uniforms? Compare and contrast the uniforms, helmets, and protective devices of Germany, Canada, France, Great Britain, and the United States. How do the uniforms the women wore during World War I compare with today’s uniforms? There are x-rays of bullet wounds and field surgery kits on display. After seeing these and reading some of the accounts of wounded soldiers and their caregivers, what might it have been like to have been wounded during the war? What would you say to your family? Stand in the crater created by an artillery shell and listen to the recording. Imagine the explosive power it would take to make that size of hole in the ground. If you were in a trench near where that shell detonated what would it make you think and feel? What are your thoughts about living and fighting in a trench in all kinds of conditions?
