Six current day countries were once part of the nation of Yugoslavia: Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. The Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918–1941), was formed as the "Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes" after World War I. These ethnic groups had inhabited the area since the 1600s. It was conquered in 1941 by the Axis powers. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ( 1943–1991), was a socialist successor state to the kingdom.
