Claudio Allocchio 7 I2 & NWS Performance and MasterClass Production WS 2010 Slide 7 About TERENA (by Valentino Cavalli, TERENA CTO)  TERENA offers a forum to collaborate, innovate and share knowledge in order to foster the development of Internet technology, infrastructure and services to be used by the research and education community.  TERENA is first and foremost a collaborative organisation.  Its core business is to bring together managers, technical specialists and other people in the research networking community with their counterparts from other countries in Europe, mobilising the expertise and experience of hundreds of professionals in the research and education networking area.

Claudio Allocchio 8 I2 & NWS Performance and MasterClass Production WS years in Voice and Video  TF-Stream  use of audio/video streaming and conferencing over the Internet  TF-Netcast  – portal for live streaming announcements  IP Telephony Cookbook  TF-VVC (Voice, Video and Collaboration)  – suitability of voice, video and collaboration technologies for NRENs  GDS admin table  TF-VSS (Videoconference Service Studies)  Europe-wide videoconferencing service for the higher education and research communities  TF-ECS (Enhanced Communication Services)  – collaboration tools and technologies that go beyond simple voice and video conferencing  Achievements: NRENum.net service, N-ECS server image and SIP Handbook

Claudio Allocchio 9 I2 & NWS Performance and MasterClass Production WS 2010 User Requirements in A&U and Social Sciences  Network to support content-centric activities and to retrieve information or sources of inspiration  Intensification of Internet technologies  in multi-disciplinary scientific projects,  users in Humanities and Social Sciences working together with researchers from Computer Science or Engineering departments  3 types of usage came out from EARNEST study:  performing arts (dance, music, theater..)  virtual environment, simulation  access to information repositories

Claudio Allocchio 10 I2 & NWS Performance and MasterClass Production WS 2010 Application areas  Categories of advanced applications clustered based on technical requirements  Real-Time Collaboration technologies (video conferencing, virtual environment)  Live performances – music and dance (streaming, video)  Libraries and digital repositories  AA Infrastructures and Trust (secure federated environment)  Peer to peer technologies  Online surveys  NRENs are instrumental : provide high bandwidth and QoS  Network is part of the creative work, and new trends in the Arts lead to pedagogical changes in student curriculum

Claudio Allocchio 11 I2 & NWS Performance and MasterClass Production WS 2010 Media management & Distribution  TF-Media task force  Media Management and Distribution Workshop and Task Force  Workshop January 2009 – 45+ participants, lot of interest  Topics:  1) Video Content Management Systems  2) Federating Media Repositories

Claudio Allocchio 18 I2 & NWS Performance and MasterClass Production WS 2010 Slide 18 About GÉANT  GÉANT is the high speed European communication network  dedicated to research and education. In combination with its NREN partners, GÉANT creates a secure, high speed (up to 10 Gbps) research infrastructure that serves 40 million researchers in over 8,000 institutions across 40 European countries. ...but this is NOT only wires and bandiwidth...

Claudio Allocchio 19 I2 & NWS Performance and MasterClass Production WS 2010 Slide 19 A&U around GÉANT: ASTRA  Ancient Intruments Sound Reconstruction   uses computer-intensive modelling techniques to reconstruct the sound and timbre of ancient musical instruments.  ASTRA relies on the GÉANT and EUMEDCONNECT networks to link high-capacity computers across Europe and the Mediterranean. ... let see (concertdemo.mov) (2:43)

Claudio Allocchio 20 I2 & NWS Performance and MasterClass Production WS 2010 Slide 20 A&U around GÉANT: Volcano Dance  “The mountain” performance   Converting Volcano Seismograms into Music - Why & Who?  To make volcano seismograms audible  To correlate seismic stages with melodies and/or sounds  To discover the “signature tune” of an eruption  To save human lives!  Italy (Mount Etna) 2001, Ecuador (Mount Tungurahua) 2006, Philippines (Mts.
