How to Make HEG Work

What is HEG ? HEG is the study of Neurofeedback controlled blood flow

Hemoencephalography (HEG) 1) HEG & fMRI live on blood oxygenation. 2) Oxygenated blood is red. 3) Deoxygenated blood is purple. 4) HEG looks at the brain to see its color. 5) Active brains are red. 6) Inactive brains are purple.

HEG light path through skull

It’s not dark in there. –In the sunlight, if you were in there, you could read a newspaper by that light.

HEG Spectrophotometer

Where does HEG Work

HEG = Blood Flow = Angiogenesis SPECT Blood Flow Map Yellow = Normal Flow Blue = Very Low Flow

HEG or EEG Learned Conditons Maladaptive, Addictive, Dissociative, Anxiety, PTSD, Brain States Developmental Disorders, Injury ADD/HD, Autism, Aspberger’s, Depression, TBI, Learning Disabled, Dyslexia, Schizophrenia, Stroke

EEG & HEG Angiogenesis & Synaptogenesis.

What Matters? Electrode placement ? Protocols ? Instruments ? Frequencies ? Therapist skill ?

What Matters ? Where we train What we train How much we train Strangely ! Not much else.

Repetition of demands develops the Brain! Repetition: Learning = Synaptogenesis Exercise = Angiogenesis

Do you like to read? T4-Fp1 Do you recognize written words ? Is reading hard work ? Do you reread sentences or paragraphs ?

Broca’s Area T3 Do your words sound right ? Is it the intended word ? Do you stumble over words ?

Bipolar Patient with Neurologic Impairment

Neurofeedback is a Brain Exercise Exercise Repetition makes the difference in Angiogenesis and Blood flow

Patient Gains vs HEG Sessions

Memory & Dyslexia At 17 Heidi couldn’t read. A word repeated many times was always a new word. Her frequent reversals said no instead of on. When math changed from visual to conceptual, she was lost. T5, F7, Fp1, Fpz, Fp2, F8, T5

Crutches F7-T3 Do you use memory aids? Do make lists? Lists of lists? Do you forget why you entered a room

Where Train ? The accessible brain module contributing most to dysfunction

functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Oxygenated blood cells are not magnetic Deoxygenated blood cells are magnetic Intense radio magnetic field spins molecules Molecules continue to spin after field is off Radio receiver amplifies spinning signal Computer makes picture slices from signal

That’s HEG neurofeedback working
