Berridge Module 11: Inflamatory responses Inflammatory responses The innate immune system is our first line of defense against invading pathogens. Initiates a vigorous and rapid inflammatory response to attack foreign pathogens Plays a key role in activating the more slowly developing adaptive immune response. o Activation of specific B and T cells to extend the host defense system Innate response is carried out by a complex series of cellular interactions, collectively known as the inflammatory response. Cellular players in the innate immune response/inflamatory response are: o Blood platelets o Macrophages o Mast cells o Neutrophils o Endothelial cells
