A FRACTION is a number that represents a part of a whole. Fractions are useful whenever you need to split things up. 1 Whole Cake 4 pieces are the same as 1 whole cake

Take a whole cake... Split it into 4 = pieces. 4 people can split the cake evenly. To 1st Grade

Look at this fraction: 3 5 3 5 of the scarf is blue. To 2nd Grade

The fraction can also be written like this: 1 2 ___ = ___ 2 4 These are equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are worth the same, even though they may look different. To 3rd Grade

When you have a whole plus a part of something else,you name it with a mixed number. 1 cake 3 cakes 1 4 2 cakes 3 To 4th Grade 1 4

We can combine wholes and parts  To 5th Grade

Everyday Fractions Fractions are useful when you want to split something fairly with a friend.

Fair Share Johnny and Sally were having a snack, but there was a problem. Sally’s mom only had 1 cookie left. What can they do? Sally remembered something that her teacher said about splitting things into equal pieces. Look to see how Sally split the cookie...

Playing Fair  Let’s practice finding things that are shared fairly. To share the soccer ball fairly it must be equal, or have the same amount on each side. fair fair not fair

 Practice Page Can you find the shapes that are split into equal pieces? * Click on the shapes that have 2 equal parts*

 GOOD JOB! YOU’RE RIGHT!!!

 OH NO! TRY AGAIN!!!

Activities For The Doorbell Rang When you have finished listening to the story please go to the Cookie Center on the red shelf and follow the directions to practice splitting the cookies into equal parts. ENJOY!

Identifying and Writing Fractions  A fraction tells about the parts of a whole or a set.  The number on the top of the fraction represents the shaded part of the whole. It is called the numerator.  The number on the bottom represents the total number of equal parts in the whole. It is called the denominator. 1 = red shaded part ___ 3 = total number of circles 1 = green part 2 = total parts 1 = yellow part ___ 4 = total equal parts

Now Let’s Practice! Next Write the fraction that tells what part is shaded. Record your answers on the sheet you get from your teacher. Click the mouse to check your answers. Next

Click the mouse to check your answers. Let’s Do a Little More ... Color each shape so that it matches the fraction. Click the mouse to check your answers. 4 3 2 1 6

ANSWER KEY 4 3 2 1 6

Fun with M & M’s 1. Take a packet of M&M’s and the record sheet from the basket. 2. Carefully pour the M&M’s on your desk. 3. How many M&M’s do you have in all? 4. Now count the number of each color.. 5. Complete the M&M activity sheet. 6. When you are sure you are finished you may EAT your candy!

Comparing Fractions If you were really hungry would you rather have 1/4 of a pizza or 1/2? 1/2 of course! Would you rather have 1/2 or 2/4 of a pizza? They’re the same, silly! When the numerators are the same, the smaller the denominator, the larger the fraction. When the numerators are different, use a picture, fraction bars or other manipulative to help you compare. The same fractions can have more than one name. These are called Equivalent Fractions.

Now, let's practice what we learned! Use these fraction strips to answer the questions below. (Ask your teacher for an answer sheet.) When you’re done, click the mouse and the answers will appear so you can check your work! Write the sign > , < or = > > < = > = = = = > 1. 1/2 ____ 1/3 2. 1/4 _____ 1/8 3. 4/10 _____ 3/6 4.. 2/6 _____ 1/3 5. 3/5 _____ 2/4 6. 2/3 _____ 7/8 7. 3/6 _____ 1/2 8. 1 _____ 4/4 9. 4/6 _____ 2/3 10. 2/5 _____ 2/6

Now, play a game! FIRST: Color the paper copy of your fraction strips. Each strip should be a different color (ie: 1/2’s blue, 1/4’s yellow, etc). SECOND: Cut this into strips, then fractional pieces. Put all your pieces in an envelope. 2 5 Each player rolls the number die. Using the number of fractional pieces on the die, try to make the biggest fraction you can, without making a whole number. You must only use one color strips!!!!! Players compare the strips….player with the largest fraction gets a point. Two points for equivalent fractions. Game is to 10. 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 Winner

Improper Fractions Mixed Numbers next An improper fraction such as 7/4 has a numerator greater than the denominator. Example: 7/4  Think  Mixed Numbers A mixed number has a whole number part and a fraction part. Example: 2 3/4  Think next

21/4 To change an improper fraction to a mixed number : Think: How many ones? How many parts left? Draw a picture. 9/4  1 + 1 + 1/4 21/4  or 9/4 = 4/4 + 4/4 + 1/4  21/4 or Divide the numerator by the denominator. wholes 21/4 next Extra fourths

To change a mixed number to an improper fraction: Think: How many parts are in the whole? How many parts are left? Draw a picture. 21/4 or First multiply the whole number by the denominator. Then add the numerator. 2 1/4  2 x 4 + 1= 9/4

Practice Complete the examples on your paper. Then hand it in for correction. Write each fraction as a mixed number. 1. 17/5 2. 13/4 3. 16/7 4. 21/4 5. 20/6 6. 23/9 Write each mixed number as a fraction. 7. 3 3/8 8. 5 7/9 9. 3 2/5 10. 61/6 next

Practice Complete these examples on your paper. Hand it in for correction. 1. Mrs. Smith uses butter that is packaged in one pound boxes with quarter sticks in each box. She is making cookies for the fourth grade bake sale. She needs 1 and 3/4 pounds of butter to make the cookies. A. How many full pound butter boxes and how many extra sticks does Mrs. Smith need for the recipe? B. How many quarter- pound sticks are needed? 2. Two and a half cups of flour are needed to make a pizza dough recipe. Mrs. Jones lost her one cup measure. She has a half cup measure that she will use. How many half cup measures does she need for the recipe? 3. Mrs. Brown’s fourth grade class is planning a pizza party. There are 27 students in the class, and they decided to order the 8 cut pizza. If each student receives two pieces, how many pizzas do they need to order ? Are there any slices left? Draw a picture to show your work.

Activities Choose one or more activities to complete. Share your work with the class. Create word problems using mixed numbers and improper fractions. Draw a picture and include 5 improper fractions hidden in your picture. Keep a journal for a day, and write down every time you encounter a mixed number. Write a sentence about each encounter. Use construction paper to make fraction pieces. Use the fraction pieces to teach another student the concepts of mixed numbers and improper fractions. next

Web Activities If you want to play a game, click on the word game. Read all the directions carefully before starting this activity. 1. Click on the underlined word recipe below. 2. First you need to read the basic cake recipe. Next you need to copy it on a recipe card, and then underline the mixed numbers. Repeat these steps for the frosting recipe. 3. Click on the names of the different cakes listed on the left, view the pictures and write the name of your favorite cake. 4. Click on the X in the corner to get back to the program. Optional Make your favorite cake, and share it with the class. Design a new cake. Using the basic cake and frosting recipes, make your cake and share it with the class. Click on the word recipe.
