WORLD HISTORY November 15, 2011

Do Now!  Read the piece from All Quiet on the Western Front and answer the questions (This will be handed in) SWBAT analyze how WWI impacted society’s views on war in the 20 th century.

IF I should die, think only this of me; That there's some corner of a foreign field That is for ever England. Poem: Before

Weapons  Both sides in World War I turned to new weapons because both sides wanted to avoid the deaths of too many soldiers.

“Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! -- An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And flound'ringlike a man in fire or lime... Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.” These lines from Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum est” illustrate how the new military advancements resulted in horrific human loss.

The quote from All Quiet on the Western Front best describes the effects of technology during WWI. “Bombardment, barrage, curtain-fire, mines, gas, tanks, machine-guns, hand-grenades — words, words, but they hold the horror of the world.” --Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front

The use of new military advancements mixed with traditional trench warfare impact World War I because the new military advancements created a “no man’s land” zone between the trenches, causing a war of attrition (stalemate). Trenches, VideoVideo

A condition caused by spending long periods of time in the trenches. Trench Foot

THE USA  The USA practiced _____________, so it did not enter the war until 1917.

America’s Entrance Sinking of Lusitania Zimmerman note Unrestricted submarine warfare Lusitania was a merchant ship that was struck by a Germany U-Boat. The American Civilian Casualties encouraged Americans to rally around entering WW1. The Zimmerman Note was a message sent from Germany to Mexico encouraging Mexico to invade and fight the United States. Germany did not follow the submarine restriction against fighting civilian ships, and it ordered its U- Boats (submarines) to fire at any enemy ship.

Entrance of the USA

WWI at Home  WWI affected the home front in many nations because:  civilians conserved food and other goods for military use.  women began working outside of the house to help the war effort.  Militaries controlled all activity in cities.

The Entrance of the USA  The war had been on- going since The entrance of new forces from the USA is most likely what defeated Germany and ended the war.
