carbohydrates -contains carbon -major source energy -breaks down into simple sugars -two types in foods: simple & complex -carbs like sugar give quick energy -starches give longer lasting energy -government thinks 45-65% daily calories from carbohydrates

carbohydrates - sugar molecules small enough enter bloodstream -then used by cells of body. -carbohydrates from whole grains -vegetables, fruit and beans -digestive system breaks carbs down  Sugar molecules -glucose important monosaccharide on Earth. -Glucose used cellular respiration created by photosynthesis

Water - 75% earth=water - 97% water is ocean, 3%= drinking water - 75% fresh.w frozen in polar ice caps - water expands 9% when frozen - dissolves vitamins, helps bring nutrients to cells - 75% human brain=water - helps swallow & digest food

Minerals - minerals help body grow - 16 known to our diet - must include 9 - calcium=healthy bones & teeth - zinc=protects immune system, ward off diseases -Iron=carry oxygen to body -Helps body grow and develop

Minerals - Iron, calcium, phosphorus, zinc - Boron- helps bones maintain healthy calcium level -Chromium- helps metabolize carbohydrates -Cobalt- maintain healthy red blood cells -Copper- vital antioxidant, helps cells stay healthy -Iron- necessary carrying oxygen parts of body -Iodine- important for healthy thyroid function

Minerals -more than 2,000 types minerals been identified -2 types -Marco & trace -Need lots of marco vitamins -Body used minerals for different functions -build new cells, control important body processes -Antioxidants slow/prevent cell damage

Vitamins - D (milk) helps bones - A (carrots) helps eyesight - C (oranges) heals body when wounded - B (vegetables) makes protein & energy - 2 vitamins=fat, water soluble - Vitamin A is a fat -Body used minerals for different functions

Vitamins -Vitamin B -whole grains (wheat, oats) -seafood -poultry & meats -dairy -vegetables - Vit.C keeps gums & muscles healthy

Vitamins -Vitamin C -fruits (oranges etc.…) -vegetables & fruits -important keeping body tissues healthy -helps body resist infections -milk fortified with vit. A -in body water-soluble don't store much

protein -Uses protein to make hemoglobin -Proteins= build cardiac muscle -builds, maintains, & replaces tissues -Used for: -growth & help build repair cells -keep muscles, skin, hair, & nails healthy -Should eat 1g protein per 1kg weight

fibre - helps digestive system - helps you feel full - dont have enough fibre: - difficulty concentrating, becoming tired - adds bulk for optimal movement -Found in: - fruits, vegetables & grains
