MDLandRec.Net A Digital Image Retrieval System for Land Record Indices in Maryland 2 Copyright 2002 Maryland State Archives  Ultimate responsibility for preserving and providing access to land records is vested in the Archives.  Indices to land records, both electronic and historic bound volumes, provide users with the means to research land record instruments.  At present, there is no mechanism for providing comprehensive access to these materials. MDLandRec.Net A Digital Image Retrieval System for Land Record Indices in Maryland 3 Copyright 2002 Maryland State Archives Mdlandrec.net will facilitate access to land record information and provide a framework to conserve records in danger of being lost.  Provide all existing JIS mainframe land record index data and images of traditional bound index volumes in a searchable, web- enabled environment accessible in the courts, by the end of fiscal year  Institute a program of conservation imaging of those land records identified as most in danger of being lost due to poor microfilming, lack of archival back up, deterioration from prolonged use, or theft.  Provide a framework for accessing and delivering those images, as well as images of land records more than 10 years old, including images migrated off ELROI to the Archives for permanent storage.
