GRADE 12 FINAL EXAM REVIEW

A LONG TIME AGO… IN AN ARTROOM FAR, FAR AWAY… THERE LIVED AN ART TEACHER… WHO REALLY HATED STAR WARS. (WELL, NOT THE FIRST ONE, THAT WAS COOL, MAYBE THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK TOO, BUT THAT’S WHERE SHE DREW THE LINE.) SHE THOUGHT THE OPENING TITLE SEQUENCE WAS BRILLIANT AND WOULD MAKE A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO THIS, YOUR GRADE 12 ART EXAM REVIEW.

EVERYBODY NOW… BAH BAH BAH BAAAAH BAH… BAH BAH BAH BAAAAAAAAH BAH… BAH BAH BAH BAHHHH…. OKAY, THAT’S ENOUGH. REALLY, STOP IT.

THE FUN STOPS HERE.

Exam Format Review MULTIPLE CHOICE SHORT ANSWER BRUSH HISTORY PAINT HISTORY STUDIO COMPONENT

What I am about to show you next may shock and educate you.

MULTIPLE CHOICE These multiple choice questions will be based exclusively on your GLOSSARY OF TERMS sheets handed out in your essay package There are 30 multiple choice questions taken directly from those sheets Know the information EXTREMELY THOROUGHLY dates, people, genres of art that artists belonged to or created, books that artists wrote, where art genres originated and in what years they started

MULTIPLE CHOICE If manifestos were written, know when they were written and who wrote them If an artist was the FIRST to do something, it will be important! Know which artists were the leaders of each movement If a specific painting is mentioned in the Glossary of Terms, know what it is an example of and who created it

MULTIPLE CHOICE The most important thing to remember in multiple choice is that the answer is already on the page—you just need to find it. RELAX. Psychological Warfare Examiners can choose the same letter successively for the correct answer. After three consecutive answers with the same letter, many students may well start to feel confused and worried. Eventually, many candidates will start changing their answers simply because they don't believe that examiners would have half a dozen of more questions with the same letter one after the other. Right word, wrong answer With multiple choice comprehension questions based on a text, a simple trick is to take obvious and prominent words from the text and put them in an incorrect option. Seeing a word or phrase from the text is not enough; these questions are designed to test comprehension not recognition of a word from the passage. I DON’T DO EITHER OF THESE THINGS.

SHORT ANSWER This section of your exam will focus on artists who were grouped together for specific art genres KNOW YOUR NAMES…FIRST AND LAST! If an art movement spurred the creation of other movements, you should know details. Art genres with many artists listed are of great importance

BRUSH HISTORY There is a specific page in your paint and brush history package that outlines the functions and special considerations of paintbrushes—know details These questions will be short answer Know specific functions and purposes for different kinds of brushes Know what brushes are suited and not suited for

PAINT HISTORY Know specifically what paints are made of, and the differences between different kinds of paint If paints are made in varying grades, know the differences between the quality level. Know the people who invented the paints, who were the first to use the paints If a surface has to be pretreated before paint can be applied, know the treatment

PAINT HISTORY Know specifically what paints are diluted with Know the finish that paints dry to Review your paint surfaces page (the one with all of the fabrics, metal, wood) and find out if certain fabrics are replacements for others Know which paints are more durable than others Know specific instruments used for specific paints

STUDIO COMPONENT An object will be provided to you OR A selection of objects will be provided to the class at the front of the exam room You will be asked to render this object using tonal shading and pencil Bring your pencils, erasers, blending stomps and anything else you would use to draw and blend with

And that is all you need to know to successfully study for your Grade 12 Art Exam!
