RUN COORDINATOR’S REPORT March 2006 Thomas Schörner-Sadenius Universität Hamburg ZEUS Monday Meeting DESY, 27. März 2006

DESY, TSS: Run Coordinator Report2 SUMMARY ¶ Overall: – smooth data taking without major problems – still suffering from both proton- and electron-induced background problems ¶ Lumi this week: – HERA delivered: ~8.3 pb-1 – ZEUS gated: ~5.8 pb-1 – Largest fill: 1.02 pb-1 delivered – best fill: 81% efficiency ¶ Very smooth HERA operation: – Twelve fills – efficiency typically close to 80% – average efficiency 69%

DESY, TSS: Run Coordinator Report3 HERA PERFORMANCE ¶ Instantaneous (specific) lumi up to 4.6*10 31 (2*10 30 ) ¶ Currents up to ~85 and 40 mA, respectively. ¶ Polarization going up to typically 37%.

DESY, TSS: Run Coordinator Report4 HERA PROBLEMS Monday: CTD trips (p BG); early dump Tuesday: Protons lost (magnet error) New collimator settings  big improvement Wedneday: excellent BG situation – but many CTD trips (?) Thursday: bad p BG P lost Dust particle Electrons lost reason unclear; then bad p BG High e- BG Electrons lost (tune control, temp alarm)

DESY, TSS: Run Coordinator Report5 ZEUS PROBLEMS ¶ Numerous small hick-ups … (many components with small DAQ problems, keeping busy, not handshaking, introducing dead time etc.). ¶ … but big disasters ¶ One word on shift crew motivation (true for both HERA and ZEUS): – Please read the instructions before you come on shift (shift instructions, message from run coordinator, tasks of the moment, known problems)! – Please talk to the previous shift crew and read the log book! – … and make sure that there is always somebody in the control room! – If in doubt call expert soon!

DESY, TSS: Run Coordinator Report6 ONLINE DDL … ¶ Uta reported on reconstruction error related to CAL tables since long. ¶ On Thursday Ulf and Sergei created new online data flow DDL to overcome problem. – First taking data … – then, late Friday night, suspecting problems and going back to old version. – Saturday morning going for new version (22) again. ¶ Reconstruction error does not occur anymore. Tables seem to be okay. ¶ But we cannot be 100% sure. Physics groups, please check the data, especially the runs 58754, and which were reconstructed with the new code in the XP line. Please report if you find problems!

DESY, TSS: Run Coordinator Report7 ZEUS PERFORMANCE

DESY, TSS: Run Coordinator Report8 ZEUS PERFORMANCE Monday - wednesday ¶ Proton background giving problems until new collimator settings were tried late Tuesday.

DESY, TSS: Run Coordinator Report9 ZEUS PERFORMANCE Wednesday, thursday ¶ Improved background situation!
