Implementing an Institutional Repository at IUPUI: A Good IDeA Kevin Petsche Acting Digital Libraries Team Leader Emily Dill Public Services Librarian, IUPUC

Objectives for today Discuss changing landscape of scholarly communication and its effect on academic libraries Discuss changing landscape of scholarly communication and its effect on academic libraries Describe how IDeA came into existence Describe how IDeA came into existence Outline IDeA policy development and how policies have evolved Outline IDeA policy development and how policies have evolved Describe current and future projects Describe current and future projects Answer any questions you might have Answer any questions you might have

Why all of these changes in scholarly communication? More specifically, why start an institutional repository? Evolving technology and the changing needs of scholars are meeting an increasingly problematic publishing landscape and shrinking library budgets.

Open Access Avenues “There are two roads to OA: the "golden" road (publish your article in an OA journal) and the "green" road (publish your article in a non-OA journal but also self-archive it in an OA archive). Only 5% of journals are gold, but over 90% are already green (i.e., they have given their authors the green light to self-archive); yet only about 10-20% of articles have been self- archived.” Harnad, S., Brody, T., Vallieres, F., Carr, L., Hitchcock, S., Gingras, Y, Oppenheim, C., Stamerjohanns, H., & Hilf, E.
