CAVTAT '08 IARU Region 1 conference held in Cavtat in November Decisions taken by member societies on a number of issues;  Callsign suffix  Bandplans  and a new Region 1 Emergency Communications Co-Ordinator...

Callsign Suffix '/D' The recommendation from GAREC 2007 to identify '/D' as suffix for stations handling traffic relating to emergency and disaster situations was made to the conference.... and was rejected.

Bandplanning Adjustment needed to 40m bandplan to allow for new 7.1 – 7.2 MHz segment. Request from one society to move 80m CoA from to MHz Results ?  New 40m CoA of MHz identified  No change to 80m CoA frequency

Events and Incidents In Region 1 L'Aquila Earthquake April 2009 Polish Flooding July 2009 Outside the Region Costa Rica Earthquake January 2009 Honduras Earthquake May all showed the importance of sharing information between regions.

Organisation and Training Active engagement of National Co- Ordinators and information sharing through new Regional Mailing list. Increase of number of National Co- Ordinators from 16 to 29 and more should follow since I know there are gaps !

Organisation and Training

Questionnaire issued to National Co- Ordinators get some basic information.  Estimate >5000 amateurs involved in emergency comms in Region 1  Gathered information on VHF/UHF frequencies in use, we should protect all spectrum used for emergencies not just HF.  Checked whether all countries could handle 'third party traffic' in emergencies.

Organisation and Training GlobalSET remains the main training opportunity for international working. IARU HF Emergency Operating Procedure now translated into English, German, Spanish, Polish, Norwegian and Portuguese ! Permission granted by RAC ( Canada ) to take parts of their training manual for use as a Region 1 Operating Manual

Publicity GlobalSET was moved from May to April 18 th to join World Amateur Radio Day.  Some countries got good publicity.  News item on BBC World Service featuring Alberto IK1YLO and Allen W1AGP.  We need to share more good news about events in our countries ! More opportunities coming up...
