THE LIST OF CAREERS ELECTRICIAN (NZ ARMY) VEHICLE MECHANIC (NZ ARMY) MAINTENANCE FITTER (NZ ARMY)

THE ROLE As an Electrician the main job is to provide electrical support to the Army. You find yourself working on a range of tasks, from appliance repairs to wiring multi-storey buildings, in many different locations.

TRAINING Basic Combat Engineer Course  Basic Combat Engineer Course An eight-week course conducted at the School of Military Engineering (SME), Linton Military Camp. It introduces soldiers to the combat side of being an engineer before undertaking their specific trade.The course covers the basics of field engineering including bridging, water supply,explosives, field defences, obstacles, booby traps, boating and other subjects. After the course you will have a good understanding of field engineering and also be qualified as an Army (explosives) Demolition Handler. You will then commence apprenticeship training at SME. · Level Two National Certificate in Electrical Engineering(NCEE) An eight-week course conducted at WelTech in Wellington. It introduces you to the fundamentals of the electrical trade. You will stay at Trentham Military Camp, Wellington, while you attend the course. Practical training and assessment will be carried out at your home unit, with all theoretical trade training assessed at WelTech throughout your apprenticeship until you qualify on the Level Four NCEE. Once you have completed and passed all these requirements, you will be eligible for electrical registration.

QUALIFICATIONS ETC. Minimum age 17 Year 11 completion School Qualifications: A proven ability in English and Maths at NCEA Level 1 (12 credits per subject) or equivalent. Driver's Licence: A Class 1 restricted driver's licence is recommended, but is not compulsory. Additional Information: 100% colour vision

WHERE YOU WORK Initial posting Initially you get posted to the School of Military Engineering, Linton Military Camp. You spend two years there learning basic engineering and electrical skills. You then can be posted to 25 Engineer Support Squadron, also at Linton, until you finish your trade training. In New Zealand Most RNZE electricians are based at Linton Camp but there are also opportunities to work in Waiouru and Burnham. Later on Once you are registered as an electrician, you then require to spend two extra years in the services as part of a return of service obligation. (This is an agreement you make with the Army. In return for four years training and a civilian recognised trade, you make a commitment to work for them for two extra years). Overseas RNZE personnel can be found in small contingents around the globe. Places they have previously been deployed include Antarctica, Mozambique, USA, Australia, East Timor, South Pacific Islands, Bosnia and Iraq.

THE ROLE As a Vehicle Mechanic, you are responsible for keeping the Army moving. You will be repairing and maintaining all operational and non- operational vehicles and equipment. This could be anything from a forklift to a NZLAV and you will earn trade-certified qualifications.

TRAINING RNZALR Basic Training  RNZALR Basic Training This is a four-week course held at the Trade Training School (Trentham), where you will be introduced to basic RNZALR skills. These skills include training in Operational Combat Services Support concepts as well as operating in-service communications equipment, concealing equipment systems and operating vehicle recovery equipment. You will also be taught about military vehicles and their functions. · Certificate of Entry into Automotive Trades Course (CEATs) This is a 14-week course held at WelTech where you start your trade learning. The course covers an introduction to disciplines including workshop safety and procedures, tools and welding, lubricants and sealant, running engines, cooling systems and brake systems, wheels and tyres. · Basic Vehicle Mechanics Course This nine-month course is held at the Trade Training School in Trentham. It builds on the information taught in CEATS and provides an introduction to military vehicles. · Continued Trade Training (Courses through to Level 5 in the automotive Heavy Trade). Ongoing training involves block courses at polytechnics, and vehicle repair and familiarisation training at the Trade Training School in Trentham.

THE ROLE As a Maintenance Fitter, you are responsible for maintaining and repairing the large range of mechanical and electrical equipment used by the New Zealand Army. From forklifts to NZLAVs to chainsaws, the variety and complexity of equipment you will be called upon to service is staggering. You will also earn a trade certified certificate.

TRAINING Trade Training School (TTS), Trentham, Wellington Trade Training School (TTS), Trentham, Wellington Initial trade training is conducted at TTS, where you will be introduced to the Royal NZ Army Logistic Regiment. This course provides you with an insight into the Logistic Regiment and the part that you will play in the Army. The course duration is four weeks, with the final week spent in Waiouru applying the skills you have just learnt in a field environment. Overseas Maintenance Fitters are employed on a variety of overseas exercises and deployments in support of operational units and activities.
