The Alabama Tobacco Quitline and July 22, 2010

What is the Quitline? A free, telephone-based tobacco cessation service that provides support materials, counseling services, nicotine patches and referrals to community- based programs for Alabama citizens.

Quitline services are funded through the Alabama Department of Public Health and the CDC.

How does the Quitline work? Caller dials Quit-Now. Intake specialist will collect information. Caller can be referred for immediate counseling or can set a date for counselor to call back. Counselor and caller will set quit date and prepare individualized quit plan for caller.

Services Provided After at least one counseling session, caller will be mailed two weeks of nicotine patches, if medically eligible. Caller and counselor will continue with counseling sessions over a several-week period. Caller is eligible for a total of four weeks of nicotine patches. NRT patches are only given to those enrolled in counseling.

Here’s the thing… Caller must be ready to set a quit date within 30 days. All counselors are master’s level counselors; most are tobacco cessation treatment specialists. Anyone can call the Quitline for information anytime Quit-Now. And, best of all, ……..

1-800-Quit-Now Alabama Tobacco Quitline …this is a FREE service for any resident of Alabama.

Quitline Hours Quitline hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Messages can be left after those hours.

Fax Referral Service If the patient is willing to make a quit attempt, healthcare providers can refer them to the Quitline via the fax referral form on the ADPH Tobacco Quitline webpage ( Complete the Patient Referral form for the Alabama Tobacco Quitline. Have patient sign consent form and then fax to Quitline. (Spanish form also available.) You will be given a progress update from the Quitline if your patient consents.

In June of 2010, we added an online component for quitting tobacco use.

Online service offers the same benefits of telephone service. Counseling and NRT patches are offered through the site. Register online and you may refer patients to the online site as well.

Your Pregnant Patients Pregnant callers and pregnant online users receive a more intensive counseling program. The Quitline/Quitnow.com will contact the pregnant user times, including after the birth of the baby, when she is more likely to begin smoking again. The number of sessions will depend on how far along she is in her pregnancy.

Pregnant Users If you want your pregnant patient to have NRT, we must have: 1. A written prescription detailing dosage of NRT (7 mg., 14 mg., 21 mg.) AND 2. A signed medical clearance form

Help us to help you. Each public health area has a tobacco prevention coordinator. Contact us for free, accredited training for your staff on Ask, Advise, Refer, Prescribe. Please ask your patients if they use tobacco. They are more likely to quit if advised to by a healthcare provider.
