Climate Monitoring and Data Management Omar BADDOUR (*) & Hama Kontongomde (*) World Meteorological Organization Geneva, Switzerland (*) Data Management Applications Division Observing and Information System Department World Climate Data and Monitoring Program (WCDMP) World Climate Program GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

OUTLINE Challenges New initiatives Update on Climate extremes, MEDARE and Climate Watch Recommendations GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

Monitoring of Climate Variability and Changes Trends, global and regional climate variability, and extreme climate events constitute an important driving force for an increased awareness of Climate Observations and Climate Data GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

Challenges Climate Data availability, QC Changing Climate Observations Networks Data Rescue Back up of existing data GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

New Initiatives 2 Guidelines for Developing and Least Developed countries (ET-ORSC, ETCCDI ) CD-ROM material on Observations, Data, and related QC, Metadata and Homogeneity MEDARE Data Rescue in the Mediterranean CLIMSOFT-WIS demonstration project Historical Data Inventories and Metadata exchange through WIS GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

Update on Climate Indices Workshop in Brazaville, Congo, April2007 Workshop in Hanoi, Vietnam, December 2007

Congo Workshop, Brazzaville April 2007 Submitted to JGR, August 2008 Recent development in Climate extremes and Indices / ETCCDI GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

Main outcomes 1. The workshop was a very good beginning for regional cooperation in a climatologically important and understudied region of the planet. 2. Workshop attendees have generously made all the indices calculate for these station time series available for the international research community at the ETCCDIs Web site 3. In a region with limited international exchange of data this is a significant advance 4. Opens up possibilities of many additional lines of research, such establishing links between climate and agricultural production or ecosystem responses. GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

Review Article, BAMS September 2008 GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

Update on MEDARE Endorsed by EC-60 Web Site was set up and a web Portal for Data Inventory is under construction Working Groups Steering group

GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

WMO Workshops on Climate Watch Help NMHSs to Implement Climate watch system to contribute in preventing climate related hazards –floods, windstorms, droughts, Heat waves, Landslides, etc Focus Period: First one in ECUADOR, 8-11 December 2008, WMO,CIIFEN, ESPOL (UV), NMHS in RA-III GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008

RECOMMENDATIONS III.1 See what CBS-GCOS lead centres could do to further encourage all CLIMAT stations to report on regular monthly basis and possibly creation of more CLIMAT reporting stations III.2 Linkage between some GCOS and WMO(WCP) regional activities GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva October 2008
