The Reaction in Cake By: Amanda and Rachel

The Science of Desert People bake cake everyday but do they understand the reaction? What makes it rise? What makes it so light and fluffy? What is the science of dessert???

The Science of Dessert When heat is added to the products, CO ₂ is released creating air bubbles in the cake. This causes the cake to rise and be light and fluffy!! The reaction in a baking soda volcano is similar to that of baking soda in cake. In both the mixture produces CO ₂ bubbles which rise up.

NaHCO ₃ + H Na + H ₂ O + CO ₂ Nomenclature Polyatomic Ionic Atomic Covalent/ “molecular” Covalent/ “molecular” “Naming of substances”

NaC O OO H H Reactants: H Na C O O H O Products: NaHCO ₃ + H Na + H ₂ O + CO ₂ Rearrange to create Separate Join

Evidence of Chemical Change Gas is produced in bubbles that cause the cake to rise. This happens when the CO ₂ is released. Applying heat causes the reaction to occur when you bake the cake. Catalyst

Setting & Background This is just one of the many reactions that occurs in the kitchen!!!

THE END!!!
