A Level Language and Literature Taster Session Miss Carpenter

What is today all about? To demonstrate a “normal” lesson as far as possible to give you a realistic impression of life in September. To introduce some of the skills and topic areas we will cover. To ensure you are clear on what is expected for the independent study task. To answer any questions.

Course Overview Unit 1 - Introduction to Language and Literature study –Exam in June 2014 worth 60% –Anthology of fiction & non-fiction texts entitled “Food Glorious Food” LO: What is English Language and Literature about?

Course Overview Unit 2 – Themes in Language and Literature –Coursework submitted in June 2014 worth 40% –Comparison of your choice of two extracts from our set texts, based on the theme of War. –A piece of creative writing inspired by your reading of these texts. LO: What is English Language and Literature about?

Introducing Perspectives on War Whilst watching the following clip from Saving Private Ryan, consider: –What is the soldiers’ perspective on war? –What do you think Stephen Spielberg might be trying to suggest about a soldier's perspective on war? LO: What is English Language and Literature about? Challenge: Is there more than one perspective of war?

Over to you Flick through the resources pack and choose one of the text pairings. Spend 5 minutes reading through these independently, considering how heroism is presented.
