Reptiles By: Chris Kan & Raymond Nguyen. Introduction Ectothermic vertebrates with lungs and scaly skin (waterproof). Reptiles are divided into four orders:
Amniotes Eggs with 4 membranes Have dry, tough or scaly skin 2 kidneys Groups Synapsids – all mammals Sauropsids – reptiles and birds.
VERTEBRATES Body parts and Characteristics. §A vertebrate is any creature that has a spinal column. A spinal column is the large bone structure that runs.
Vertebrates Fishes  All fishes are ectotherms.  Ectotherms- animals with body temperatures dependent upon the temperature of their surroundings. 
Class Reptilia – Amniote Origins and Nonavian Reptiles With the reptile group(s) we see better adaptation to a terrestrial existence. With the reptile.

AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES SOME ARE SLIMY…SOME ARE NOT!

AMPHIBIANS CLASS: AMPHIBIA Vertebrates that are aquatic as larvae and terrestrial as adults Have moist skin, lack scales and claws, and adults breath with skin and lungs

Smallest vertebrate class (4000 species) It has three orders: Frogs and toads (order ANURA) Salamanders and newts (order CAUDATA) Legless amphibians (order APODA)

AXOLOTL: MEXICAN SALAMANDER OR “WALKING FISH”

REPTILES Vertebrates with adaptations that enable them to live entirely on land Have lungs that are more efficient than amphibians, scaly skin to prevent drying out, amniotic egg with shell, yolk and several protective membranes

4 ORDERS OF REPTILES Snakes and lizards Crocodilians Turtles, tortoises + terrapins Tuataras (last species of an order common in time of dinosaurs)

TURTLE: LIVE IN SALT WATER TORTOISE: LIVE ON LAND TERRAPIN: LIVE IN, OR AROUND, SWAMPS AND FRESH WATER

TUATARA: NOT A LIZARD, THOUGH IT LOOKS LIKE ONE. LIVES ONLY ON NEW ZEALAND Parietal eye: photoreceptor
