Essential Question and Goals What are the tools that designers use in planning rooms? How can they be useful to us designing our ultimate bed room? Answer these questions so that we can begin designing our ultimate bedroom.

Principles of Design

Proportion Proportion is the relationship between objects, or parts, of a whole.

Which circle in the middle is bigger?

Proportion Elements seem to be an appropriate size for the space they fill.

Proportion The ratio of one part to the whole. Things just look right.

Scale Overall size of an object compared to other objects Objects are an appropriate size in relationship to other objects

Scale Use larger pieces of furniture in large rooms.

Balance Feeling of equal weight to objects on both sides of a center point

Formal Balance One side is a mirror image of the other side Bilateral symmetry

Informal Balance Objects on each side of the central dividing line are different. More exciting and dramatic Asymmetrical symmetry

Emphasis Emphasis creates a center of interest Also referred to as a Focal Point

Empasis: Focal Point What is the focal point of... The Living room? A Room with a fireplace? The Bed room? The Dining Room? The Bathroom?

Emphasis Create contrast by using one element to dominate the others. Try a red pillow on a blue sofa to provide interest, or emphasis.

Harmony Harmony is achieved when Unity and Variety are effectively combined.

Harmony- Unity The design is seen as “whole”. Unity can be achieved through matching and coordinating

Unity Combine similar elements to accent their similarities. For example, use several framed photos of the same size or arrange a collection of your favorite books on a shelf.

Harmony- Variety Variety can relieve monotony by giving the eye a number of different details to look at.
