The Elements & Principles of Design

Do Now On the card provided, write a one paragraph description of what your ultimate dream bedroom will look like. Be specific about what furniture and furnishings will be in it, as well as what you will use the room for. You have 5 minutes to do this.

Essential Question and Goals What are the tools that designers use in planning rooms? How can they be useful to us designing our ultimate bed room? Answer these questions so that we can begin designing our ultimate bedroom.

Elements of Design are the tools artists use to create art.

Space the open area around objects Also the physical room being decorated

Line Outline of an object Also the mark on a surface Lines vary in width, length, direction and color.

Types of lines Vertical Lengthen Horizontal wider

More Lines Diagonal or wavy Add the feeling of movement Pattern Break up the space

Form shape and structure of objects

Form

Free up outdoor space with stacks of style from $2,399.

Texture the way something feels or looks like it feels.

Textures - Examples Shag Carpet – fuzzy Pillow –soft Brick-rough Tile- smooth

Color is the most important part of decorating Discussed in color scheme packet

Principles of Design

Proportion Proportion is the relationship between objects, or parts, of a whole.

Which circle in the middle is bigger?

Proportion Elements seem to be an appropriate size for the space they fill.

Proportion The ratio of one part to the whole. Things just look right.

Scale Overall size of an object compared to other objects Objects are an appropriate size in relationship to other objects

Scale Use larger pieces of furniture in large rooms.

Balance Feeling of equal weight to objects on both sides of a center point

Formal Balance One side is a mirror image of the other side Bilateral symmetry

Informal Balance Objects on each side of the central dividing line are different. More exciting and dramatic Asymmetrical symmetry

Emphasis Emphasis creates a center of interest Also referred to as a Focal Point

Empasis: Focal Point What is the focal point of... The Living room? A Room with a fireplace? The Bed room? The Dining Room? The Bathroom?

Emphasis Create contrast by using one element to dominate the others. Try a red pillow on a blue sofa to provide interest, or emphasis.

Harmony Harmony is achieved when Unity and Variety are effectively combined.

Harmony- Unity The design is seen as “whole”. Unity can be achieved through matching and coordinating

Unity Combine similar elements to accent their similarities. For example, use several framed photos of the same size or arrange a collection of your favorite books on a shelf.

Harmony- Variety Variety can relieve monotony by giving the eye a number of different details to look at.

Harmony Is it harmony? What do you think?

Rhythm- Repetition When a design element is repeated

Rectangular frame Rectangular pattern Rectangular furry pillow Rectangular windows Circular lamp for interest Clean smooth lines Rectangular/Square A few things for contrast Repetition

Rhythm- Opposition When lines meet to form a right angle Checks and plaids Square necklines Square pockets

Rhythm-Gradation Light to Dark Thin to Thick Small to Large

Rhythm- Radiation Lines flow out from a single point.

Rhythm- Transition Curved lines carry the eye.

Backgrounds Walls Paint wallpaper Windows Treatments include Curtains Drapes Shutters Blinds Shades Floors Permanent -wood floor »wall to wall carpet Temporary - area rugs Ceilings

Furniture Functional Furniture Many Furniture Styles Choosing and arranging furniture is the important part of designing your room

Traffic Patterns Where you place furniture influences how you move through the space. You can create a room within a room by the way that you place the furniture.

Why learn about these things? So that you have some idea of what you are doing when you design your own bedroom. So that your room doesn’t look like your mom designed it.
