MATH 90 CURRICULUM RENEWAL & MATH MAKES SENSE 9 WORKSHOP June 25th, 2010

Goals for this Session:  To become acquainted with the renewed Mathematics 90 curriculum  To become familiar with the Math Makes Sense 9 resource components and lesson format  To get ready to teach Unit 2: Exponents and Powers

All the information you receive today is available to you on the GSCS High School Math Support Website: Once you subscribe to this blog, you will receive an update each time the website is updated with more information & resources. High School Math Website

“BELIEVE IN KIDS! GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND MAKE SENSE OF MATHEMATICS. YOU DO NOT NEED TO TELL THEM EVERYTHING. KIDS ARE AMAZING!” – John Van de Walle

Curriculum Overview Jigsaw – in groups of 4 Each person reads one of the following sections from the curriculum guide and then shares it with the rest of the group:  Models and Connections p.20  Teaching for Deep Understanding p. 21  Inquiry p. 23  Assessment and Evaluation p. 38

Curriculum Overview In your groups, match up the curriculum outcomes and indicators with the units in the resource. Once you have completed this, familiarize yourselves with the outcomes and indicators in Unit 2: Exponents and Powers.

Math 90 Course Outline  Unit 2 – Powers and Exponent Laws (Sections 2.1 – 2.5)  Unit 3 - Rational Numbers (Sections 3.1 – 3.6)  Unit 1 - Square Roots & Surface Area (Sections 1.1–1.4)  Unit 5 – Polynomials (Sections 5.1 – 5.6)  Unit 6 – Linear Equations & Inequalities (Sections )  Unit 4 – Linear Relations (Sections 4.1 – 4.5)  Unit 8 – Circles Geometry (Sections 8.1 – 8.4)  Unit 7 – Similarity & Transformations (7.1 – 7.7)  Unit 9 – Probability & Statistics (9.1 – 9.5)

Math Makes Sense: Resource Components  Student Textbook  Manipulative Kits  Printed ProGuide (teacher resource)  Solutions CD – worked out solutions to the assignments  Test Generator – different types and levels of questions for each unit & questions that reinforce/review prior skills and knowledge

Math Makes Sense: Resource Components ProGuide DVD  e-book format of Teacher ProGuide  Teacher PD videos (Big Ideas, Hot Topics)  Unit Prep Talk videos  Classroom videos  “See it” videos and animations  “Try it” virtual manipulatives

Math Makes Sense: Resource Components ProGuide CD - editable files (need Math Type 6.0 and Adobe Reader)  Program Masters  Unit Masters (from the back of each Unit ProGuide, including the sample test & step-by-step masters)  Planning for Instruction Charts  EP(Extra Practice) & APK (Activating Prior Knowledge) Handouts  Projects (Unit 1, 4, 9)

Math Makes Sense: Resource Components Preparation and Practice Book - reproducible copy and teacher edition  This book is designed to support teachers in their work with students who struggle with math.  It parallels the textbook, but provides a lower entry point for weak students.  Handouts can also be used to review prior concepts and reinforce the course material.

Math Makes Sense Overview Unit Components:  Launch (includes key words, unit objectives, & purpose)  Lessons  Mid-Unit Review  Game  Study Guide  Unit Review  Practice Test  Unit Problem

Math Makes Sense Overview Extras:  Cumulative Reviews (Units 1-3, Units 1–6, Units 1–9)  Projects (before Unit 1, after Unit 9)  Start where you are – encourages different learning styles  Math Link- to highlight cross-curricular, mathematical or real-world connections  Technology – to explore ways of using computers and calculators to do math  Glossary

The Lesson Model l Investigate Connect Practice Reflect & Share Discuss the Ideas

The Lesson Model Assessment Focus Question – allows students to demonstrate their level of achievement Take it Further – extension questions Reflect – opportunity for students to communicate/summarize their understanding

Math Makes Sense Overview ProGuide Structure to Support Teachers:  Before – Getting Started: Teachers should activate prior knowledge using the introduction to the lesson and key questions. Present the problem in the investigate and ensure expectations are clear.  During – Investigate: Teachers should listen carefully, observe and assess, and ask questions to facilitate learning.  After – Connect: Review responses from the reflect and share. Use the connect and examples to complete the lesson.

Items to consider  Importance of a positive attitude  Classroom organization  Manipulative organization  Parent Communication  Use of Calculators  Assessment Focus Questions  Word Walls – highlights key words in each unit

UNIT 2 – POWERS AND EXPONENT LAWS

Math Support  Future Math 90 Workshops  Test Generator Session  Individualized Support  Sharing of Resources  Renewed Curriculum & MMS Implementation Checklist  Please fill out feedback form. Thanks for coming!
