printed by Making Salem State University South Campus Accessible to All OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY DEPARTMENT The occupational therapy department at SSU is dedicated to promoting positive change through civic advancement and service learning involving students, the school, and the community in order to enhance equity, respect and human rights for others. The OT students of SSU conducted a (APAB) survey for SSU South Campus Short Term Recommendations Give students requiring handicapped parking an access card to the faculty lot. Create a cut-away in the curb and shorten wooden guardrail so that the sidewalk through the faculty lot is accessible from the student handicapped parking spaces. Install an intercom or phone to call the appropriate person(s) to operate the elevator lift, both at top and bottom of the stairs where the lift is located. All elevators in south campus should have obstacle detecting sensors. Fill cracks and holes on all ramps. Allow students to access and park in the upper lot. Long Term Recommendations Long Term Recommendations Install ramp at the main entrance, equipped with button-operated doors. APAB is dedicated to providing businesses with the information needed to improve accessibility for their patrons. APAB staffed, operated and run by individuals with disabilities. “It is a service designed to guide businesses to become more accessible and available to a broader customer base and to commend community businesses that are accessible and inclusive” (ILCNS, 2012). INTRODUCTION All People Accessible Business (APAB) HOW WAS THE SURVEY CONDUCTED? RECOMMENDATIONS REFERENCES Conducted by occupational therapy students after completing the APAB training program. Accessibility survey was conducted throughout South Campus. The data was recorded using ADA guidelines and regulations and than entered into the APAB data base for scoring. Accessibility for students and faculty with multiple disabilities were considered as well as wheelchair accessibility of the buildings, bathrooms and common areas. Results were compiled and recommendations were made to improve accessibility of South Campus. INDEPENDENT LIVING CENTERS History & Purpose 1960’s first Independent Living Center was formed by students at UC Berkeley, California Operated & controlled by individuals with disabilities Self-advocacy service to enable participants to develop necessary skills and knowledge to achieve independence.
