Chapter 1.1 I can summarize the benefits of studying children. I can explain how learning about typical behaviors can help you better understand children. I can describe how childhood today differs from childhood in the past.

Chapter 1.2 I can explain why childhood is an important time of development. I can compare and contrast the leading theories about how children develop. I can identify and give examples of the five characteristics of child development. I can explain the impact that heredity and environment each has on development. I can list and define the stages of development after childhood. I can describe how self-esteem and development are interrelated.

Chapter 1.3 I can explain why observation is important in the study of child development. I can compare subjective and objective interpretations. I can evaluate four methods of observation, and give examples of situations in which they might be used. I can list specific guidelines to follow when observing young children.

Chapter 7.1 I can describe the three patterns that a baby’s physical development follows. I can explain the effects that heredity, nutrition, health, experiences, and environment have on an infant’s growth and development. I can describe how a typical baby grows in the first year. I can classify the different movements a baby makes as reflexes, gross motor skills, or fine motor skills.

Chapter 8.1 I can compare and contrast emotional and social development. I can explain the importance of attachment to emotional development. I can relate the care an infant receives to emotional development. I can analyze people according to different temperament traits. I can explain how the emotional environment in the home can affect a baby’s development.

Chapter 8.2 I can identify signs of social development in infants. I can describe how social behavior is learned. I can explain the importance of play and how it affects social development. I can analyze the relationship of play and exploration.

Chapter 9.1 I can list the functions each part of the brain controls. I can describe how brain cells work together. I can explain how the brain becomes organized. I can identify activities that support the development of brain pathways. I can give an example of how neural pathways in the brain help a baby to acquire new skills.

Chapter 9.2 I can list four signs of intellectual growth in infants. I can identify Piaget’s first period of learning and describe specific abilities that babies learn during this period. I can summarize the importance of sensory stimulation to the intellectual development of infants. I can describe the progression of concept development in young children.

Chapter 9.3 I can describe ways parents and other caregivers can help babies’ intellectual growth. I can identify toys appropriate for a baby’s age. I can explain how babies develop communication skills.

Chapter 10.1 I can identify typical changes in height, weight, proportion, and posture from ages one through three. I can describe how to keep one-to three-year-olds’ teeth healthy. I can compare fine and gross motor skills for this age period.

Chapter 11.1 I can describe common emotions and patterns of emotional development from ages one to three. I can analyze how individual differences affect emotional development. I can explain how self-concept develops. I can assess the importance of sleep in emotional development.

Chapter 11.2 I can describe patterns of social development from ages one to three. I can relate the importance of making friends to a child’s social development. I can compare and contrast different approaches to guidance. I can describe ways to help children develop sharing skills. I can identify common behavioral problems and effective methods of dealing with them.

Chapter 12.1 I can relate the connection between brain research and learning. I can describe how intelligence and environment affect learning. I can differentiate among the four methods of learning used by young children. I can explain how children develop concepts in stages. I can summarize how one-to three-year-olds develop in seven areas of intellectual activity.

Chapter 12.2 I can identify factors that affect a child’s readiness to learn. I can describe the skills necessary for learning reading and math. I can explain ways parents and caregivers can guide the learning of young children. I can give examples of the toys that are appropriate for children at different ages. I can identify speech delays in young children, and describe how a speech-language pathologist can help.

Chapter 20.1 I can explain how regular checkups and immunizations can help prevent illness. I can outline the causes, symptoms, and treatment of childhood allergies and asthma. I can discuss effective ways to care for and comfort a sick child.

Chapter 20.2 I can describe how to prepare for the possibility of a fire. I can outline the steps to follow in an emergency situation. I can describe appropriate first-aid procedures for common childhood injuries. I can identify the rescue techniques to use in life-threatening situations.

Chapter 21.2 I can compare different types of disabilities. I can explain current approaches to education for children with special needs. I can summarize what types of help are available to families raising children with special needs. I can identify the traits typically exhibited by gifted children.

Chapter 21.3 I can define child abuse and describe the four types of maltreatment. I can analyze the signs of abuse in children and adolescents. I can summarize common reasons behind abuse and maltreatment. I can explain what can be done to prevent child abuse.

Chapter 22.1 I can analyze the reasons people need substitute child care. I can compare and contrast the different types of substitute care. I can determine the questions parents should ask when choosing substitute care.

Chapter 22.2 I can describe the benefits of having learning centers in early childhood classrooms. I can identify procedures that promote health and safety in early childhood classrooms. I can evaluate the role of planning in providing appropriate learning experiences. I can assess methods for promoting positive behavior in the classroom and dealing with misbehavior.
