Faith Based Outreach

The Process… Community Health Initiative, Kern County (Education and Enrollment) PICO California (Outreach) Neighboring schools COLLABORATION Invitations are made to congregation during services Announcement is placed on church bulletin Reminders are made every week Banner is hung outside of church Flyers are delivered to neighboring schools OUTREACH Presentations are made explaining Patient Protections and Individual Mandate An average of ½ hour is spent answering group questions An average of ½-1 hour is spent answering individual questions Participants complete pre- screening form EDUCATION Enrollment Counselors pre- screen applications Questions are answered during phone call Appointments are made and clients are reminded documents to bring ENROLLMENT

Conclusions 1. Success was achieved only at churches where there was a relationship already established 2. Having letter from Diocese helped open doors 3. Making regular announcements at services helped increase attendance at education events  Announcement in church bulletin  Announcements from pulpit  Have pre-screening sheets available at church office  Stay after service to answer questions and complete pre-screening sheets 4. Scheduling the education event immediately after the church services results in higher attendance.

Conclusions 6. Having a presentation with an overview of the law and the options to obtain coverage answers lots of questions. 7. Talking about the protections under the law and essential benefits encourages people to apply. 8. Leave enough time for Q&A and expect lots of people to approach you after with questions about their personal situation. 9. Pre-screening and making appointments helps in planning how many CECs to take and you can answer questions during the phone call so the enrollment is smoother on the day of the event. 10. Expect walk-ins.

Next Steps 1. Talk to members to make introductions to other churches 2. Talk directly to members to influence church leadership 3. Establish church ministries on social justice
