Today in Room 326… ADMIT SLIP: School supplies, then CHNOPS HW: Complete Lesson Recall at end of worksheet CONTENT OBJ: SW list and describe properties of CHNOPS LANG. OBJ: SW debate verbally and write notes ANNOUNCEMENTS: Thank you for the homework submissions! Got tons of them- was thrilled. All will go into ASPEN this weekend. (ASPEN access?) AGENDA: Notebooks CHNOPS notes Debate EXIT SLIP: Clean room & chairs pushed in Date:9/10/15Title:CHNOPSPage # ___

Journal Setup 1. Write your name and class/room on the front cover! 2. Open up the journal, and on the inside of the hard cover, write the following: Teacher: Ms. Gately Website: Your Name Here Biology, Rm 326

Journal Setup Next, on the first page of paper, write at the top “Table of Contents” Then, make a column with labels as shown above Then, flip THREE pages (including the first page) and on the FOURTH page, label the top right corner as #1 Table of Contents Date Title Pg # 1 Continue labeling, using both sides of the paper, until you reach #10

Interactive Notebook This is your interactive notebook! You will do nearly all your work in here When you write out Admit Slips, notes, or have questions, where everything in here Make sure each new day is labeled when you arrive, by looking at the bottom of the Admit Slip 

Put your required school supplies on your desk for me to check! (Have $$ out if you plan on buying from me!) 9/10/15 Date:9/10/15Title:CHNOPSPage # ___

Page Numbering If there is still half a page left when you start a new class period, that’s ok! Different titles/topics can be on the same page, just make sure to label them. You will continue labeling past 10. People will be on different pages- that’s ok too! Just keep your Table of Contents up to date.

Now for your first Admit Slip in the journal!... List the elements that you believe make up the human body NOTE: In your journal, make sure to write out the Admit Slip question before writing the answer, so when you go back later, you know what was going on! Date:9/10/15Title:CHNOPSPage # ___

Yes, CHNOPS! What does it stand for?? CHNOPS = Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus, Sulfur* These six elements make up 98% of the mass of all living organisms* Note the star! When you see this symbol, it means take a note in your journal! Note! You don’t have to write the notes word-for-word. You should paraphrase/use symbols to take notes quickly!

Wait… What’s an Element?* (What do YOU think?) Element = simplest form of a pure substance (aka they cannot be broken down) Elements are made of atoms = smallest part of an element that still has the properties of an element What does an atom look like? Note the title star! This means that all the info on the page should be in your journal!

Is water an element? If not, what is it? A compound! A compound is combination of two or more elements* Water = H 2 O 2 hydrogen connected to 1 oxygen

CHNOPS Debate! Which element is the best???

Directions… In teams of 3, you will be assigned one of the six elements that make up biological molecules (??) Aka, molecules that make up life (bio = life) You will use facts as evidence to support the claim that your element is the best Let’s look at the sheet…

In your groups… Choose who is responsible for which role (you will ALL be taking notes on your sheet!) Prepare an opening statement that gives evidence to support your claim Everyone share out, then repeat steps for the remaining sections

Homework Complete the “Lesson Recall” at the bottom of the worksheet. The fully completed worksheet is due tomorrow (9/11).
