Application of M&S World’s Largest Aviation and Aerospace University Shafagh Jafer, Ph. D. Assistant Professor Software Engineering ERAU, Daytona Beach, FL

Research Areas: application of M&S 1) Study of Natural Fire Hazard: Proposing an Integrated Predictive Modeling and Simulation Framework (HazFire) 2) A Model-based Imprecise Operating Systems for Critical Real-Time and Embedded Applications (iRTOS) 3) M&S of Segmented Multi-Path Data Transfer for Air-To- Ground Cellular Network (ATG) New Area:  Aviation-specific modeling for certifiable and safety- critical sw systems

HazFire M&S Framework Interdisciplinary approaches to address multiple aspects of natural fire: phenomenological and firefighting perspectives. Objective1 (research): study complex behavior of natural fire, develop methods to better render the consequences, incorporating meteorological data analysis as well as environmental factors using computational M&S methodologies. Objective2 (analysis): provide risk analysis and cost-benefit assessment strategies associated with the impact of natural fire hazards on community infrastructures. Objective3 (development): develop cross-cutting software framework (HazFire) to integrate natural fire behavior models, providing spatial representation of the location, real-time decision-support, prediction, visualization, and mitigation. Objective4 (cognition): ensure user-friendliness and usability for first responders and incident managers.

HazFire: DEVS M&S Fire Spread

HazFire: cost-benefit model E valuation of Highly Valued Resources and Assets

Hazfire System Architecture

iRTOS: imprecise RTOS Imprecise Computation-based real-time OS using IDEVS (imprecise DEVS) [best-paper Springsim TMS-DEVS 2012] – formal methodology for reliable design of RTOS – novel IC-based task scheduling algorithms – risk-free simulation-based testing before final deployment

iRTOS Goals Model continuity from simulation stage till embedding the system on the target hardware in an SDE design scheme. Providing a hardware-software co-design approach for designing the entire embedded system, where models represent different hardware and software components and are tested together as an integrated system. Offering a hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform where some of the models act as the simulated components working along with other actual hardware components.

iDEVS

iDEVS: mandatory and optional states/tasks

iDEVS Example

M&S for Air to Ground (ATG) Network Segmented Multi-Path Data Transfer for Air-To-Ground (ATG) Cellular Networks Exploit multiple-to-multiple path data-routing between the aircraft and the ground to improve the data bandwidth in ATG networks. Based on patented work for Ericsson Canada for mobile network High-fidelity Discrete-Event (M&S) methodologies using Omnet++ network modeling software framework

Promising Research Trend and Room for Collaboration Application of Domain-specific M&S for aviation (e.g: Flight Simulation ML, aircraft rerouting, …)  Challenge in Avionics SW Dev. & Modeling: The Certification Process  Strict, lengthy, & cumbersome standards imposing requirements on the development and verification of airborne avionic systems
