Facility and technologies of the biogas utilization Conference: From Science To Business 11 – 12 October 2006 year Kiev Khazhmuradov Manap A. Telephone: National Science Center "Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology" Kharkov

Talk outline 1.What is needed in the market? 2.Brief technology description. 3.Stage of development. 4.Who needs it & how many will they need? 5.What is my unique technology advantage? 6.Competitive matrix. 7.How will I beat the competition? 8.Opportunity for joint work.

Proprietary information statement The technology material presented in this talk is not available for licensing. None of the slides contain any confidential or proprietary information which would prevent patenting the technology.

Problem Description & Market Need For facility industrial using it is necessary: To adjust it to the sizes for practical usage; To increase facility productivity; To adjust this technology for the individual customer; To adjust the technical documentation for the specific facility; To find specific customer of this facility. The potential market there are: Agriculture Factories of the food industry. Plants of biological purification foul water. Solid domestic waste dumps. In one word anywhere where is organically waste.

Brief technology and facility description Biogas (methane (СН 4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gaseous mixture) is fuel gaseous mixture with СН 4 50%. Using of the biogas is important task for solving problems: ecological – limitation of biogas atmospheric emission, economical – additional energy source. Facility and technologies of the biogas utilization was developed for solving of these tasks. There are 6 separation modules, which work in turns, thus ensuring the continuity of the technological process. Depending on composition of the input biogas and requirements for the end product, facility can consist from all modules or only from one module (separation one). Facility allows to separate biogas into the components: СН 4 and CO 2. General view of the model of the experimental-industrial facility for biogas separation

Brief technology and facility description Pressure swing method was used for this work. Method uses different concentrations of the biogas components in the gaseous phase at the upper (0,25MPa) and lower (10kPa) pressure level in adsorber, that is caused with different adsorbability of the carbon dioxide and methane. When gaseous phase is sampled from the adsorber at the upper pressure level, we obtain mixture enriched with less sorbed component – methane, when it is done at the low pressure level – more sorbed carbon dioxide. Facility block scheme are shown at the pictures. Block diagram of the autonomous complex facility for biogas utilization.

Advantages The main innovative aspects are using of the Pressure Swing Method (PSM). The small cycle duration and process room temperature allow making mobile separation facilities. These facilities combined with motor-generator, working at the produced methane, ensure autonomous facility operation.

Experimental results Zeolites produced in Ukraine was chosen experimentally: CaA for CO 2 adsorption from biogas flow NaA for biogas dehydration Technology worked on developed laboratory model facility and have such characteristics: liquefied almost pure methane in standard vessels with volume 5 liters under the pressure 20 MPa and with purity 96%; liquid carbon dioxide at the similar vessels under the pressure 5 6 MPa; solid carbon dioxide (dry ice). productivity in biogas terms – 50 nm 3 /hour; admixtures of the other components in the separated methane and carbon dioxide - ~4%

Stage of development and international patents Worked technology of biogas separation into the main components at the laboratory separation facility. Developed and made model of the PSM-facility for biogas separation with productivity on biogas 5 m 3 /hour. Model combined with motor- generator with power 6 kW. Regimes of the separation facility operation finally optimized at the operating model. Development phase – laboratory tested, available for demonstration Patented: Patents of Ukraine: U A, bulletin 4, 2001; U A, bulletin 2, 2002; 8870, bulletin 8, Model of the experimental-industrial facility for biogas separation Motor-generator

Targeted Market Segment May be interested in such facility: heads of the municipal waste treatment plants; farmers having methane-tanks for biogas production; owners of the domestic wastes dumps. Cost of facility $17000.

Competition As an competitor of such facility - facility of French firm "Airliquide", in which semipermeuble membranes for separation methane from biogas are used. German firm "Carbo Tech" developed facility for biogas enrichment by adsorption method. The weak points of the suggested at the market settings are: for membrane method - limited productivity and high enough working pressure level; for adsorption method - absence of dioxide recycling system. The advantages of the method are: - high productivity, because one full process cycle takes only few minutes; - low working pressure level (units of MPa) - large coefficients of biogas separation, that allows to obtain pure products (methane and carbon dioxide) with another component admixture of few of percent; - possibility of biogas component drying in main working adsorber.

Comparative competitive Authors dont have enough information about facilities for biogas separation into the main components (methane and dioxide carbone) where proposed method is used other company.

Opportunities Organization of the joint enterprise Obtaining of the international patent Searching for the partner for adjustment of the technology and design documentation for industrial facility

Facility Model of the experimental- industrial facility for biogas separation Motor-generator
