Natalie Svoboda HOW SLEEP DEPRIVATION CAN AFFECT ATHLETES
PURPOSE This study looked further into the issue of sleep deprivation affecting athletes, comparing Concordia University athletes to this issue, and if sleep deprivation affects their performances.
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY A significant amount of research has been devoted to finding if sleep does affect athletic performance. Researchers have been struggling with this topic with some finding significant information about sleep in athletics while other studies have found no impact. More recent research has been agreeing that sleep is essential to an athlete By doing more extensive, reliable research results will most likely help athletes, coaches, trainers, and other facilitators understand the importance of sleep and wanting the best performances in sports.
PREVIOUS RESEARCH **Based on more recent research: Generally sleep loss produces general decline in performance Can affect overall growth, muscle growth and repair, bone building, & metabolism Has been linked to obesity & anxiety problems Can affect focus mentally and emotionally
