Mobility and Protocols Toward State of the Art Analysis of IETF Protocols: Mobility Support Issues Omar Alfandi

IP Mobility: Definition Mobility is the ability to send and receive communications anytime anywhere. Mobility means that both source and destination devices, applications and people are free of the constraints imposed by physical location.

IP Mobility Types Terminal mobility or host mobility User mobility Session/flow mobility

Mobility Management Types Location Management –Location registration –Location Update HandoverHandover Management –Intra-system (Horizontal) –Inter-system (Vertical)

Mobility Support in Different Layers Layer 3 Solution Macro and Micro-mobility Layer 2 Solution : Access Mobility or Link layer Mobility Cross Layer Solution (L2 + L3)

Mobility Layer Network Layer Mobility Layer Application/Service Layer Communication System

Registration /Deregistration AuthenticationAccess ControlIdentificationUser Profile MgmtDelivery of servicesInitiation of services Mobility-based application support Discovery of Service/facility Generic Mobility Layer

DAIDALOS II Task 3.2.3: Inter-domain mobility Study different types of mobility within and across domains, e.g. user, terminal, IP, session, flow mobility.

Examples of interesting IETF Workgroups MIPv6 Signaling and Handoff Optimization (mipshop) Mobile Nodes and Multiple Interfaces in IPv6 (monami6) Network-based Localized Mobility Management (netlmm) …..

Current Work Inter- domain Intra- domain Federated Trust/SA IP-Changeetc.. Different proposed IETF Protocols: EAP, PANA, DIAMETER, RADIUS and SIP
