The Endocrine System. o Def: System of glands in various parts of the body that manufacture & secrete hormones into the bloodstream o hormones = chemical.
Endocrine System A transmitter of chemical “messengers”
 Consists of glands that secrete substances called hormones into the blood stream.  Hormones stimulate growth and other kinds of reactions such as changes.
The Endocrine system Glands and hormones. Endocrine system 1. Functions: Producing hormones to help maintain homeostasis 2.Parts of endocrine system:
Endocrine System. The endocrine system is made up of glands that release hormones into the bloodstream to control body functions such as growth, reproduction,

The Endocrine System. Function The endocrine system produces chemicals that control many of the body’s daily activities. The endocrine system also regulates.
The Endocrine System. functions Controls body functions and helps maintain homeostasis by using hormones. hormone – chemical messenger made in one cell.
The Endocrine System. What is the Endocrine System? Definition: a system of the body which consists of glands that release substances (hormones) into.
Main Function: It releases hormones into the blood to signal other cells to behave in certain ways. It is a slow but widespread form of communication.

The Endocrine System Lesson 6-3

Objectives Describe the endocrine system Identify hormones and their function in the endocrine system

Bell Ringer Read Exploring Psychology p. 170 Discuss adrenaline rush Also caused by epinephrine

The Endocrine System Sends messages to and from the brain –Called hormones Hormones produced by endocrine glands –Carried in the blood

Hormones Affect growth of body structures Affects metabolic processes

Pituitary Gland Is controlled by the hypothalamus Acts as the master gland Secretes many hormones Controls growth and reproduction

Thyroid Gland Produces thyroxin Too little-feel lethargic, gain weight –Called hypothyroidism Too much- lose weight, can’t sleep, overactive –hyperthyroidism

Adrenal Glands Active when a person is frightened or angry –Release epinephrine –Causes heart rate and breathing to increase –Generate extra energy for handling situations Also secrete cortical steroids –Helps muscles to develop

Sex Glands Testes- in males –Produce sperm and testosterone –Testosterone decides sex of a baby –Important for male secondary sexual characteristics

Sex Glands Ovaries- in females –Produce eggs and estrogen –Regulate the female reproductive cycle –Can cause hormonal changes that lead to PMS Fatigue, irritability, and depression

Hormones Vs. Neurotransmitters Both affect the nervous system Neurotransmitter- released right beside the cell that is to excite –Fast acting Hormone- released into the blood and spread through the body –Slow acting
