EU-Africa Collaboration Project IMPEL-TFS project, led by Norway The project team: representatives from IMPEL-TFS Secretariat and the Steering Committee, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Portugal and UK. Legal base: European Waste Shipment Regulation (EC) 1013/2006 and Commission Regulation (EC) 1418/2007 Art. 37 and 49.2 of Reg. Objectives The main aim of the project is to effectively clamp down on illegal shipments of waste to Africa in order to protect human health and the environment. Establish formal contacts in key African countries (focus on W.A); To raise awareness and enhance compliance with Reg. EC 1013/2006 through innovative communication (focus on exporters in Europe); Assess current situation regarding imports from EU, enforcement structures, treatment possibilities, problematic wastes streams and import restrictions; Agree on how to deal with verification requests and detected illegal shipments and their return (i.e enforcement part of component 4 of the Basel E-waste project)

Many shipments checked/controlled were illegal (in Europe) Do the exporters really want to send waste to Africa?
