50,000 transformed places 1 million people involved

It’s not about money and it’s not about votes. It’s about action The campaign will be fuelled by BBC programming across all networks and driven by a consortium of partners to leave a lasting legacy A transformed landscape with a massive increase in sustainable, wildlife-friendly green space across the UK And in the process, significantly heightened awareness and understanding of nature The BBC and its partners will mobilise a million people to transform our landscape to create breathing places for people and wildlife Gardens, school grounds, wild play areas for kids, community forests, business green spaces, roadsides, parks and green corridors linking these spaces together

Nature is under threat UK wildlife / biodiversity is struggling – climate change is already having an observable impact; habitats are shrinking Nature Conservation needs re-inventing Our partners agree that the nature conservation movement needs a new approach to meet the challenge – appealing to a broader range of people, simplifying its messages and uniting behind a ‘big idea’, emphasising the positive impact of individual actions Our audience is ready for this There is a huge latent audience interest in nature – and we’ve identified the right triggers and partners to involve a huge new audience in action The BBC charter commits us to ‘Building Public Value’ Our aim is to provide programmes and services that connect communities, bring people together and encourage participation to help build social cohesion … we need to think of our audiences not only as consumers but as members of a wider society to which we must contribute Why?

Why… - A space that people care for, for the benefit of wildlife and people - Anything from a small community space to a major landscape project What is nature-friendly? Three simple actions are involved: - Providing food - Providing shelter - Providing water A breathing places project or activity must: be intended to result in long term improvement to a space for the benefit of wildlife and people; be free of charge for volunteers to take part in or be run on a cost-recovery basis (but it may be sited within a paid for visitor attraction) What is a Breathing Place?
