Navarra and Pyrenees Atlantics border's area Navarra Autonomous region hab. “Land of diversity” Pyrenees-Atlantics Department in south- west France hab. 2nd french department in terms of quality of life!

The Irati Forest is the second largest and best preserved beech and fir forest in Europe. An immense green mantle of some 17,000 hectares that is still in an almost unspoiled state. Thousands of visitors every year. Lacking of telecommunications in the area. “Hot spot” 1: Irati Forest

“Hot spot” 2: Way of St James Different pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela: the most frequented is the French route, coming into Spain at Roncesvalles, Navarra. Thousands of pilgrims from the whole world every year. Difficult mountain stage, particularly dangerous when adverse weather conditions. Over 50 incidents per year (S&R). 4 casualties in recent years.

“Hot spot” 3: Ski areas Pier de San Martin and Belagua ski resorts, with very important impacts in the economy of the border region. Larra Nature Reserve, home to the most unique and representative flora, fauna and habitats of the Pyrenees. Thousands of visitors per year.

SAFER PYRENEES: project’s objectives The main objective of the project “SAFER PYRENEE” is the improvement of the preparedness for emergencies in the cross border area of the west Pyrenees. This Objective includes: 1.- Improve the knowledge of the risks, resources and the infrastructures in border area 2.- Improve the effectiveness of the response and operations 3.- Improve the operation coordination between the both countries 4.- Improve the population awareness

Common databases of risk maps, resources and infrastructures. Determine the nature and extent of risk in west Pyrenees and model risk scenarios to build upon preparedness measures.
