CULTURE COMICS CINEMA

CULTURE The culture of the United States of America is a Western culture, having been originally influenced by European cultures. It has been developed since long before the United States became a country with its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, and folklore. Today the United States of America is an ethnically and racially diverse country as result of large-scale immigration from many different countries throughout its history. BACK QUESTION

COMICS An American comic book is a small magazine originating in the United States and containing a narrative in the form of comics. Since 1975 the dimensions have standardized at 6 ⅝" x 10 ¼" (17 x 26 cm), down from 6 ¾" x 10 ¼" in the Silver Age, although larger formats appeared in the past. Since the invention of the modern comic book format in 1933, the United States has produced the most examples, with only the British comic (during the inter-war period and up until the 1970s), the Italian fumetti and the Japanese manga as close competitors in terms of quantity. CINEMA The cinema of the United States, also known as Hollywood, has had a profound effect on cinema across the world since the early 20th century. Its history is sometimes separated into four main periods: the silent film era, classical Hollywood cinema and the New Hollywood. Since the 1920s, the American film industry has grossed more money every year than that of any other country. Classical Hollywood Cinema Silent film New Hollywood BACK

Fumetti An italian word which refers to all comics. In English, the term refers specifically to photonovels or photographic comics, a genre of comics illustrated with photographs rather than drawings. BACK QUESTION

Manga Is the Japanese word for "comics" and consists of comics and print cartoons. In the west, the term "Manga" has been appropriated to refer specifically to comics created in Japan, or by Japanese auteurs, in the Japanesse language and conforming to the style developed in Japan in the late 19th century. BACK QUESTION

British Comic A British comic is a periodical published in the United Kingdom that contains comic strips. It is generally referred to as a comic or a comic magazine, and historically as a comic paper. BACK QUESTION

Silent film A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound, especially spoken dialogue. In silent films for entertainment the dialogue is transmitted through muted gestures, pantomime and title cards. The idea of combining motion pictures with recorded sound is nearly as old as film itself, but because of the technical challenges involved, synchronized dialogue was only made practical in the late 1920s. BACK

New Hollywood New Hollywood or post-classical Hollywood, sometimes referred to as the "American New Wave", refers to the time from roughly the mid-1960s to the early 1980s when a new generation of young filmmakers came to prominence in America, influencing the types of films produced, their production and marketing, and impacted the way major studios approached filmmaking. BACK

Classical Hollywood Cinema Classical Hollywood cinema or the classical Hollywood narrative, are terms used in film history which designates both a visual and sound style for making motion pictures and a mode of production used in the American film industry between roughly the 1910s and the 1960s.
