Title: Survey of occupational accidents in industries and workplaces of Kermanshah province,2012 By: Dr Ghanbari Department of Occupational Health Engineering, KUMS,Iran

Introduction: Different work accidents create several socioeconomic problems for community. In addition to the direct effects of the accidents, these are major causes of functional damages and other work-related problems.

Introduction: Occupational accidents are one of the undesirable consequences of the expansion of industry and modern technology which threatens life in workers. It is estimated approximately one hundred million occupational injuries happen in the world. According to NIOSH’s report, 7 million annual work-related accidents occur in America, three million of them would be severe and leading to death of 6,500.

Introduction: In Iran, 20,399 people are injured annually, of these, 85 people die (0.42% of accident victims).

Objectives: Given the importance of preventing work-related accidents, it is necessary first to assess the accidents carefully to identify their reasons. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate work-related accidents in 1391 among workers in industries and workplaces in Kermanshah province.

Methods: The study is cross-sectional study. The research population include injured workers in industries and workplaces in Kermanshah province in The research data were collected by referring to the labour inspection department of Kermanshah. The obtained data were analyzed.

Results: the number of injured people were 382 person. The results showed that the most common accidents were related to construction and industry workers (with 57.1%) and(with 17.8%) respectively.

Results: (%) numbe r type of activity(%)numbertype of activity 1 4 Sales, hotels and restaurants Agriculture, livestock, fishing and forestry Transportation and warehousing Mine Financial and business services Industry Social service Building Other Activities 5 19Water, electricity and gas Table 1) absolute frequency (n) and relative (%) of victims of work-related accidents in 1391 in Kermanshah Province in terms of the type of activity (n = 382 )

Results: Considering the time of the incident, it was found that most accidents occurred in the morning hours. Also, in terms of the gender, the present study indicated that the rate of the accidents were more in man than women (with 99.5%). Also, the aged group of and married people had more accidents. More married (with 69.6 %) were injured. Most the injured victims had a diploma degree(with 24.9%).

Results: The results showed that hands (with 38/2%) were the most affected. The next rank was related to legs (with 25.4%) were the most affected. Also (11.3 %) of victims died. The results indicated that falling was the leading cause of accident (with 26.7 %) followed by beating objects and machines (with 20.7%) (Table 2).

Results: Table 2) absolute frequency (n) and relative (%) of victims of work-related accidents in 1391 in Kermanshah Province in terms of the factor of accident (n = 382) (%) number factor of accident (%) number factor of accident Slip and fall Fall from height Electric shock Falling objects Cargo Dealing with objects and machines Stay falling debris and rubble Contact with objects and hot surfaces Stuck in or between objects and machines Sprinkle burning and molten material ا0.8 ا0.8 3 Other 2.1 8Explosion and Fire

Discusion: The results indicated that the incident was related to construction activities. The study is consistent with other studies (Joeng, Kartam, Unsar and Sut) while is contradictory with the other study such as my previous study. It seems that there are some reasons about the high rate of accidents in construction workers such as increasing trend of home construction in Kermanshah. Furthermore, construction workers are naturally at risk of accident.

Discusion: Falling was the leading cause of accident which is in line with the other studies(Iran: Helwany, Hong Kong: Wang, Taiwan: Chai).

Discusion: The results illustrated that 11.3 of accident victims were dead which are higher compared with national average rate of death in this regard (with 0.42%).

Discusion: Considering the education level of accident victims, the results indicated that the incident was related to those who had high school education level. These results contrast with the results of other studies (Bahrampour in Yazd- Mehrabi of staff of the armed forces-Khodabande in Kerman coal mines).

Discusion: At the time of the incident, accident victims, sex and marital status of accident victims, the results of this study are consistent with results of other studies (rubbery, Bahrampour, Lopez, Jerusalem and Mehrparvar)

Conclusion:  Monitoring of construction sites  The use of personal protective equipment  Analysis of occupational accidents annually  Safety Interventions (training, …)
