What the playing field looks like…. Spain was leading the competition to colonize the New World. England didn’t want to be left out of the competition.

England’s Desires: 1. Resources! 2. English merchants saw new customers.  Native Americans & Colonists 3. England was crowded and the New World offered space.

France NOT HERE…this area is claimed by France. England England tries its first colony right here. Spain NOT HERE…this area is claimed by Spain.

The 3 rd Time is a charm Sixteen years after Roanoke, the English again attempted to colonize a portion of the North America.

How to pay for a colony: 1.) A businessman wants to start a colony. 2.) He asks the King for permission. 3.) Start a company that will fund the colony.
