Review for Test Friday

Temperature is the measure of….. The average kinetic energy

The lowest possible temperature is…… 0 degrees K

A liquid thermometer works because liquid __________ when warmed. Expands

Heat is thermal energy transferred from one object to another because of a difference in ____________. temperature

The thermal energy of an object is….. Kinetic plus potential energy

When a pot of water is put on a stove , the water at the top gets hot primarily by…….. Convection

When a cool can of soda is insulated, the heat flow into the can on a hot day…… Decreases

Water makes a good coolant because it has a ……. High specific heat

All objects emit _________ radiation. electromagnetic

Most materials ________when they are heated. Expand

Heat is _______ energy that is transferred from one object at a certain temperature to another at different temperature. Thermal

A heat engine changes…… Changes thermal energy into mechanical energy

In a diesel engine, the fuel is ignited by…… Compression

A device that can be used both for cooling and heating is a …… Heat pump

Explain how heat is transferred between a hot and a cold object by conduction. The molecules in the hot object are moving faster than those in the cold object. When the objects are in contact, the fast moving particles bump into the cold molecules giving up some kinetic energy to the cold particles and raising their temperature.

If you were going to replace water as the coolant in an engine, would you look for something with a higher or lower specific heat? Explain Higher specific heat because it would absorb more heat for each degree rise in temperature.
