THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS - Introduction CIVITAS - cleaner and better transport in cities – stands for CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability. CIVITAS is an EU initiative for supporting and evaluating the implementation of integrated sustainable and energy efficient urban transport strategies in European cities that should make a real difference to the welfare of the European citizen.

THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS Objectives and key elements Objectives Sustainable, clean and (energy) efficient urban transport measures Integrated technology and policy measures Critical mass and markets for innovation Key elements Network of cities for cities Public Private Partnerships Political commitment Living “laboratories”

THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS In figures 3 phases (2002 – 2012) 58 CIVITAS Cities 19 CIVITAS projects 13 demonstration projects Measures are reaching 52.4 million citizens Total budget: approx. EUR 250 million Total EC contribution: approx. EUR 180 million

THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS Plus CIVITAS Plus is the 3 rd and current phase of CIVITAS Runs from Groups 25 cities in 5 demonstration projects EC contribution: EUR 80 million Demonstration projects in CIVITAS Plus

THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS Themes addressed Alternative fuels, energy efficient vehicles Collective transport and integration modes Demand management strategies Mobility Management: Influencing travel behaviuors Safety and security Car independent lifestyles New concepts for goods distribution Transport telematics

THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS Expected impact Increased energy efficiency in urban transport Improved road safety in urban areas Increased share of biofuels and other alternative fuels Reduction of CO 2, pollutant emissions and noise Improved efficiency and effectiveness of urban transport and modal balance

THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS II success stories Toulouse, France Solutions for alternative fuels and complementary measures to achieve a 100 percent clean bus fleet: results Biodiesel experimentation on 81 old diesel buses Purchase of diesel buses equipped with soot filters and installation of soot filters on old diesel buses Feasibility study on how to use biogas for the operation of the CNG bus fleet

THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS II success stories Burgos, Spain Access restriction in the city centre: results 4 km 2 “clean zone” in the historical centre and monument area, bigger than initially planned Traffic jams reduced by more than 25 percent Emissions reductions: 0,1 tonnes of CO 2 per inhabitant in the last 3 years & 2g less of NO x per m 3 40g reduction in particulate matter per m 3 97 percent reduction in car traffic (<2,000 vehicles per day) with 200 percent increase in pedestrians and 400 percent in bikes Good levels of awareness and acceptance

THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION CIVITAS Plus success stories Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain New public transport network: results From 17 bus lines with frequencies of minutes to 1 tram line, 1 rapid transit bus, 9 bus lines with frequencies of 10 minutes Increase of 45 percent in number of trips per month Increase of over half a million users since January 2009 Speed of service improved by 14.5 percent Reduction of 6 percent in fuel consumption Future steps: construct 4 queue-jumping lanes, 20 new bus platforms, increase tram schedules
