HAPPY THURSDAY Collect YOUR graded papers from the front table. Did you turn in your papers? On your BELLWORK sheet write “Update I.A.N.” Update your TABLE OF CONTENTS – look on the wall. GLUE/TAPE your papers to the correct page according to the “Table of Contents” on the wall. Have your HOMEWORK out. Lab Fees?

QUIZ #2 Write Name and Quiz # (written in marker on sheet protector) Write answers (ONLY LETTERS) on separate sheet of paper and title “Quiz #2” DO NOT write on the quiz. When finished with quiz, turn into the front and collect goggles and apron.

Reinforcing Hydrolysis and Dehydration Synthesis

On Page 12 (Title this page “Gloop Lab”) Compare and contrast hydrolysis and dehydration synthesis. Your answer must be exactly 33 words.

Monomer / Polymer Kinesthetic Activity

Silly Putty Activity

Directions for making “gloop” *Decide on ONE “Materials Person” per table, this is the ONLY person allowed to leave the lab group* 1.In your plastic baggie, add glue up to the 1 cm line (Use a ruler: CM not Inches). 2.Add 2-4 drops of food coloring to the glue and knead together with your hands. 3.Add 7mL of water to the baggie using the marked graduated cylinder and mix thoroughly. 4.Add 8 mL of borax solution to the baggie using the syringe and mix thoroughly. (Mix the solution in the beaker before using.)

The glue contains a polymer called polyvinyl acetate resin. We changed the polymer’s behaviors twice in this activity; once when we added water and the second time when we added borax. Copy and answer the following questions (on page 12): 1.When we added water, what process was occurring; dehydration synthesis or hydrolysis? Describe the glue after water was added. 2.When we added borax, what process was occurring; dehydration synthesis or hydrolysis? Describe the glue after borax was added.

Summarize (on page 12) what happened during the Silly Putty Activity in 41 words. You must use the words: polymer hydrolysis dehydration synthesis
