Do Now… After quietly taking your seat, please take out your Homework from last night (put in the turn in box) and World Geography materials There was a mouse running around the front of the room earlier, so watch where you step… There is some candy in the back corner of the room by the paper towels, first come first serve…

Go Geography… Topic: Push and Pull Factors How would you describe a push factor and a pull factor? The circumstances at the beginning of class, which was a push factor and which was a pull factor? Can you recall a push/pull factor involving the United States in the past? What were they?

So What Exactly are Push/Pull Factors Push-Pull Factors. When people migrate, they don't just leave one place and magically arrive somewhere else. Usually something pushes them away from their native country and pulls them toward a new place. This idea is called the push-pull factor Push/Pull Factors Activity

Examining Immigration Trends into America… Students will research their heritage or a country of interest using your smart device. As you conduct your research summaries, important information notes should be taken from each source and recorded into a Graphic Organizer. Research should focus on determining possible reasons for your ancestors’ migration to the United States and should be classified as push or pull factors. At the End, you will write a Summary Paragraph explaining the information you found.

Common Push/Pull factors… What are some of the major Push or Pull Factors you discovered?

The Effects of War/Conflicts How do wars or conflicts affect immigration trends? Common examples of wars or conflicts involving America?

Connecting Conflicts to Geography… What part does geography play in major conflicts? How do conflict effect the geography of a place? Closing Go Geography! Reflect on the questions above, discuss with your shoulder partner Respond in your Go Geography

Closure… No Homework over the weekend Will most likely have a test a week from today… so keep that in mind

Do Now… After quietly taking your seat, take out your World Geography materials and turn to the Go Geography! Section of your binder…

Go Geography! Topic: Quebec vs. Canada For the past few decades, citizens of Quebec have been in a struggle with the government over much of their French heritage should influence daily life… 1) Do you believe a state or province should be able to separate from its own country over cultural disagreements? Why or why not? 2) Do you think separation from the mother country might affect relations with other countries around the world? How so? 3) Do you believe there is an acceptable situation in which separation would be deemed appropriate? Explain.

Quebec vs. Canada In a 1995 vote, a large number of Canadian citizens living in Quebec voted to separate from the rest of Canada. Anticipation Guide, followed by an article on Quebec separatism After reading article, complete the rest of the Anticipation Guide, checking whether or not your predictions were accurate.

Short Constructed Response Write a short constructed response stating whether or not a province of Canada or a state within the United States should have the right to separate or secede from their countries. Consider Quebec’s situation as well as Texas from the United States, a state who has threatened on several occasions to secede from the United States.

Natural Processes: Lesson Impression The following impression words will be used in the next activity… flooding, hurricane, shortages, evacuations, and coastal erosion. You will be writing a short narrative titled “Children of the Storm” Your narrative should use all of the given words, leading into what you believe the activity will be about

Children of the Storm While reading, consider the following: How do you think physical environment, natural processes, and disasters can impact human activities? Read “Children of the Storm” article, then respond to above questions…

Natural Disasters: Canada and US There are numerous natural processes that take place in the United States and Canada. Natural processes in Canada include: earthquakes (Great Banks Earthquake of 1929) floods (Red River flood of 1997) hurricanes (the 1927 Nova Scotia hurricane and Hurricane Ophelia in 2005) fires (Okanagan Mountain park fire of 2003) Natural processes in the United States include: earthquakes (San Andres Fault) floods (Great Flood of the Mississippi River in 1993) hurricanes (hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005) fires (annual wildfires in California and the West)

How would you fix them?! Imagine you and your group have been assigned to the new disaster solving squad for FEMA! Brainstorm a list of ways you would solve local or regional problems (e.g., government disaster aid, evacuation plans) associated with natural processes.

Closure… Reflection on Lesson Impression
