AGENDA 1. Internet Evolution. 2. Why ICANN ? 3. What is ICANN ? 4. Why we Have to Participate in ICANN ? 5. Results of ICANN Yokohama Meeting. 6. Multilingual Internet Names Consortium (MINC) & Arabic DNS Work Group. 7. Recommendations.

INTERNET EVOLUTION 1. IP Addressing: Each device connected to the internet has to have a unique IP address. Global Internet

INTERNET EVOLUTION IPV4 – Limited No. of Hosts. – BIG US companies owns most of the IP address space i.e sprint, MCI … etc, IPV6 is coming. Regional Internet Registries – RIPE (Réseaux IP Européens). – ARIN (American Region for Internet Numbers) – APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre)

Internet Registries by Region All ISP’s in GCC are member in RIPE.

INTERNET EVOLUTION 2. Domain Names: – It’s easier to remember names than numbers. – Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) ( – Country Code Top Level Domain: ccTLD ( i.e UAEnicwww.etisalat.ae Global Internet mail.emirates.net.ae

INTERNET EVOLUTION 3. Internet Protocols. - Defines the mechanism and the parameters for transferring packets from the source to the destination over TCP/IP. Source Distination

INTERNET EVOLUTION 4. Root Name Servers: - Required For Delegating DNS queries to the TLD’s authorized domain name server. - The structure of the Domain Name Servers.AE DNS Root Name Server.UK DNS Root Name Server Root Name Server.COM, NET.ORG DNS.QA DNS.co.ae..ac.ae.org.ae. Etisalat.co. ae uaeu.ac.aeUae.org.ae.com.qa..org.qa..cnn.com.

INTERNET EVOLUTION - 13 Root Name Servers (10 US, 2 Europe, 1 Japan)

WHY ICANN ? Who Manages the NET? – Who controls: Domain Name System policies IP Address allocation Protocol standardization Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA): – Contracted by U.S. government. – coordinate and administer the policies and technical protocols related to Internet domain names and addresses. Since the Internet is becoming a driving cultural force for humanity, humanity has a natural right to have a fair say in the networks altering their lives.

WHY ICANN? Therefore a Global organization is required, which is: – Open, – Fair, – Inclusive, – Transparent, – Accountable and – Globally represented.

WHAT IS ICANN The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the non- profit, private-sector corporation that coordinates a selected set of the Internet’s technical management functions previously performed by the US Government or its contractors and volunteers. ICANN was formed November 1998.

WHAT IS ICANN ICANN is responsible for: – Domain Name System – IP Address allocation – Protocol standardization – Root Name Servers Management.

WHY PARTICIPATING IN ICANN ? 1. Name and Address are the fundamental resources for Internet use. 2. Danger to lose opportunities in Cyber space, or ignored. 3. Opportunity to create new and fair global system

Impact on Developing Economies 1Unfair distribution of resources –Stanford U. has more IP addresses than whole China 2Fee for Name and Address: tax? 3English: dominant language – Other language/culture not accepted? 4Setting precedence to other cyber- space issues (security etc.)
