Definitions of the Day (DODs) 8.7 – More Multiplication Properties of Exponents Power to a Power Product to a Power

What does raising to the 3 rd power really mean ? What is another way to write ? Expand each term. How many 5’s do you have? Rewrite the string of 5’s by using exponents. What might be a general rule for this process?

Raising a Power to a Power If and m and n are integers, Notice! This is NOT the distribution property. Distribution is when a factor is multiplied over addition or subtraction!!!

Raising a Product to a Power If and n is an integer, Notice! Again, this is NOT the distribution property. You should raise each term to the given power!!

Simplify each expression

Your Turn!!

Sentence Frames 1.When raising a power to a power, I need to ____________________ the exponents. 2.When raising a product to a power, I need to____________________________________________
