Phasor Measurement Units

Super grid - Technology 1 Coordination and control of the network would use smart grid technologies such as phasor measurement units to rapidly detect imbalances in the network caused by fluctuating renewable energy sources and potentially respond instantaneously with programmed automatic protection schemes to reroute, reduce load, or reduce generation in response to network disturbances.

Power quality - Smart grids and power quality 1 Modern systems use sensors called phasor measurement units (PMU) distributed throughout their network to monitor power quality and in some cases respond automatically to them. Using such smart grids features of rapid sensing and automated self healing of anomalies in the network promises to bring higher quality power and less downtime while simultaneously supporting power from intermittent power sources and distributed generation, which would if unchecked degrade power quality.

C History 1 With the invention of phasor measurement units (PMU) in 1988 by Dr

C Technical overview 1 In typical applications phasor measurement units are sampled from widely dispersed locations in the power system network and synchronized from the common time source of a Global positioning system|global positioning system (GPS) radio clock

C Phasor networks 1 A phasor network consists of phasor measurement units (PMUs) dispersed throughout the electricity system, Phasor Data Concentrator|Phasor Data Concentrators (PDC) to collect the information and a SCADA|Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system at the central control facility

C Implementations 1 *The [ North American Synchrophasor Initiative] (NASPI), previously known as The Eastern Interconnect Phasor Project (EIPP), has over 120 connected phasor measurement units collecting data into a Super Phasor Data Concentrator system centered at Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). This data concentration system is now an open source project known as the openPDC.
