The Digestive System: Vocabulary Part I 1) digestion : the process of breaking down food into smaller, simpler substances. 2) saliva: a liquid in the mouth that helps soften food. 3) pharynx: part of the throat that connects the mouth to the digestive tube (esophagus). 4) esophagus: a long muscular tube that leads to the stomach.
