1804 MMay 14 th Expedition begins ** 3 October 24 th discovers village of the Mandan and Hidatsas Indians. The captains build Fort Mandan across the river. ** 3 November 4 th Toussaint Charbonneau, French-Canadian fur trader hired as a translator. His wife Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian who was captured by Hidatsas and sold to Charbonneau was also brought along

1805  February 11 th Sacagawea gives birth to Jean Baptiste  April 7 th Lewis and Clark send their keelboat and a dozen men back downriver, with maps, reports, and Indian artifacts for President Jefferson. The remaining party heads west.  Late July The expedition reaches three forks of the Missouri River, and name them the Gallatin, the Madison, and the Jefferson, after the Secretary of the Treasury, Albert Gallatin, the Secretary of State, James Madison, and President Thomas Jefferson. continues southwest up the Jefferson

1805 Cont.  November 7 th Clark believes he can see the ocean; writes his most famous journal entry: "Ocian in view! O! the joy." The expedition is actually still 20 miles from the sea.

1806 MMarch 23 rd Mission had reached the south side of the Colombia river and begin to head back home ** 4 July 3 rd Split into two teams after crossing the Continental divide so Lewis could explore the Marias river AAugust 11 th Lewis and Clark reunite when they reach the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers SSeptember 23 rd the party reaches St. Louis

Afterword LLewis and Clark met their objective of reaching the Pacific, mapping and establishing their presence for a legal claim to the land, and they established diplomatic relations and trade with at least two dozen Indian nations ** 5 During the Expedition, Lewis and Clark drew about 140 maps of the area which had been unknown to Euro-Americans
