COLLECTION The Collection Department is responsible for the preparation and implementation of the NAI collection policy. The tasks of the department range from acquisition, research, cataloguing, managing and making the NAI collection accessible to contributing to exhibitions, publications, educational projects and other presentational activities. The department is also the NAI knowledge centre where knowledge about the collection and its context is collected, managed and made available to visitors in the study room and to virtual visitors on the internet.

PRESENTATION The Presentation Department is responsible for the preparation and implementation of the presentation policy. This includes all programme activities with which the NAI presents itself to the public, such as exhibitions, educational programmes, events, travelling exhibitions and international exchange programmes. In addition, the Presentation Department fulfils a platform function in the form of lectures, debates and symposia, events, workshops and publications. The Educational team is responsible for the development and implementation of educational activities and targets both educational institutions and other target groups with an interest in architecture

Collection: Archives and Library The NAI has one of the largest architecture collections in the world; eighteen kilometres of shelves containing drawings, sketches, models, photographs, books, journals and other materials. The NAI is entrusted with the safekeeping and management of these archives and collections and with making them accessible to the public. Virtually every prominent Dutch architect since 1800 is represented in the archives, which include the personal archives of such famous architects as Dudok, Cuypers, Berlage and De Klerk. The NAI's library is open to the public and contains over 35,000 books on architecture and related disciplines, plus an extensive range of Dutch and international architectural journals. Researchers, students, and anyone else interested may consult publications and archives in the reading room.

These days, no building is designed without the use of a computer. The archives that the NAI will acquire in the future will largely consist of digital files. This has major ramifications for the way in which the material is to be managed, preserved and made accessible. Research into sustainable strategies for the preservation of digital material has not yielded any definitive solutions yet, but several measures can be implemented in the short term. Berlage Institute, Rotterdam

Postgraduate The postgraduate program of the Berlage Institute provides the next generation of architects and urbanists with tools to better comprehend and intervene in the complexity of contemporary life. Study is conducted in an in-depth collaborative and experimental setting. This two-year research program is structured around three design research studios, series of history and theory seminars, fieldwork, and master classes. Participants take part in two one-term studios in the first year and one yearlong studio in the second year. A series of public colloquia, lectures and exhibitions complements the research program.

PhD The Berlage Institute offers a PhD program in conjunction with the Faculty of Architecture of Delft University of Technology. Presently, there are two different ways to obtain a PhD from the Institute. The first is through individual doctoral studies and the second through participation in "The City as a Project" PhD program. The PhD program is meant to function in close relationship with the postgraduate program. PhD candidates are encouraged to take part in design studio presentations and other related postgraduate events.

Public The architectural and urban research, ideas, and projects pursued at the Institute are expanded, consolidated, and complemented for presentation to a global audience through a series of architectural broadcasting initiatives. This content is disseminated as public events, print and digital publications, and online interactivity.
