Plot Do Now #9: What is the first stage of the plot of a story? What happens in this stage? Today’s Objective: Students will evaluate and apply their knowledge of plot by participating in Reader’s Workshop, working on Acheive3000, and working collaboratively with 90% accuracy. Today’s Standard: Reading 3.2 Identify events that advance the plot, and determine how each event explains past or present actions or foreshadows future actions.

Agenda Do Now/Attendance Agenda Check Notes/video on plot Reader’s Workshop Stations: Independent: Acheive3000 Collaborative: Plot Practice Exit Slip

Plot The plot is the sequence of events in a story. Plot consists of five stages: exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Exposition: the beginning of the story where characters, situations, and conflicts are introduced Rising Action: the part of the story that builds suspense and leads to the climax Climax: Usually the most interesting point in the story. Consists of usually one event that turns the problem around. Leads to the problem being solved.

Falling Action: the story starts to wind down, the problem is in the process of being solved. Resolution: the result of the climax. Helps solve the problem. Foreshadowing: when the author gives clues or hints as to what will happen later. What were the plot stages in Maniac Magee?

Reader’s Workshop: Plot As you are reading today, think about the elements of plot in your book. Write down the parts of the plot that you may know already. Or, you may write down any foreshadowing that you recognized. Be ready to share what you wrote with the class by the time reading has ended. We will now be reading independently. Remember, reading is thinking, so we must remain silent during this time.
